I just finished a feature shot with hd-cam and used stereo Zaxcom
wireless system (not the eng version) for feeding the camera. Reason for
doing this was the numerous troubles with cables and hmi lamps and video
monitors especially when fed from same mains source.
Sound on the camera was great. No trouble with hmi lamps or anything
else ether. I compared the sound from my dat with sound from video by
reversing phase in pro tools and the result was as predicted: complete
silence. Audio was identical.
There are few complaints though:
- Reading the transmitter numbers is very difficult.
- Battery life is difficult to predict. I used NiMH batteries and
chanced them twice a day, but still i ran out of power a few times in
cold weather.
- Cables for the transmitter were very thin and short. One of them was
cut and I had to make new ones. (Soldering Lemo connector is not my idea
for fun.)
I used AKG PR 81 for tape return and found that receiver and Zaxcom
transmitter can be very close to each other if transmitter power is lo.
With high tr-power I had the transmitter in my waist pocket and AKG
receiver near my shoulder and everything worked fine. AKG transmitter on
top of the camera did no harm to Zaxcom receiver even when it tripped on
top of it during one shot.
