Which of Pola Negri's films do you like the best? There is an
American film where she moves to a small town in Iowa?! After being
"done wrong" by a cad, she acquires a whip from a relative, and flogs
said cad at public function, giving him a slash on the brow.
This of course leads to immediate marriage; what a wedding night
that must have been.
Which is her most unbridled (ahem) performance? |

That's why the lady had a chimp! (wondering about Norma D.) |

I was very impressed with THE YELLOW TICKET. She gives a remarkably
straightforward and convincing performance. Perhaps it's because that
early in her career she wasn't locked into her usual style. She's
great in THE WOMAN HE SCORNED, though the film has some plot flaws & a
forced tragic ending. Heck- she's good in everything I've seen,
sometimes better than the film as in HOTEL IMPERIAL. |

My all-time favourite performance by the Negri is the one in
Lubitsch's DIE BERGKATZE, where Pola, the robber baron's daughter,
beats up just about every man in sight. It is to all intents and
purposes a screwball comedy and you can tell how much she enjoys
that.
There's a great little vignette showing her at somebody else's
dressing table "trying out" the perfume and make-up. |

Thanks guys, I still wonder if she would have agreed to play Norma
Desmond... But Swanson had a reality grip on herself, and must have
been the envy of a lot of old gals. (Like Theda..) |
