- they auction off what is supposedly the last box of Wonka bars in the UK.
Yet the candy shop has another bar to sell Charlie. (He makes a comment
that he doesn't have to hide them away anymore, but why would he have been
hiding them? Obviously not in hopes of finding a ticket, or else he already
would have looked through them.)

- Wonka was looking specifically for children, not adults, for his factory
tour. Yet, chocolate bars were for sale to anyone, and in fact were
probably more likely to be found by an adult than a child if you think about
it. This doesn't really make any sense.

- IIRC, in the book Charlie had a father on the scene. Anyone know why he
would have been dropped in the movie? In the book, was the dad dissed for
the grandfather when it came time to picking a companion for Charlie for the
factory tour?

They were the GTA IV of their day--
But, since the South American gangster "found" the fake fifth ticket,
everyone thinks it's over....Even Charlie.

Father was too busy working slave-hours at the toothpaste factory.

(Another minor book detail the Tim Burton version obsessive-compulsively
detailed over for no visibly apparent reason.)

Speaking of Gaiman, if you're anywhere near MIT in a couple of weeks,
you can see him there!

Try a bit of "Matilda" as a chaser, Danny DeVito style.

But if you want to stick with Dahl, check out who *really* wrote the
movie version of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"...

Well, in the book, he did say that - in the newspaper.

Don't remember exactly how it was phrased in the movie.

Mmmm. It's the UK.

I was reasonably sure that chocolate factory was in Germany, but the
rest of the exteriors were definitely England.

Wup. It was apparently shot completely in and around Munich.

Obviously he knew where all the tickets were and just hung out there.

When it comes to Willie & His Chocolate Wonka, you sure know your
stuff!

If this seems obvious to you, then perhaps you missed the original context
of my reply.

I guess I missed it . . . ? But I think it's great you know all this
info about Charlie & His Chocolate Willie.
I've seen the original movie only once.

Wonka was behind the curtain in the entire film...absoloutly
everything...EVERYTHING...

Being "behind it" still doesn't answer my question. He had no way of
knowing who'd buy the tickets - adults or children.

Of course he does...all he has to do is plant the bloody tickets.
Obviously 'the Candy Man' works for Willie and handed Charlie the
ticket. It would have been easy to have people in place to plant those
other tickets wherever he wanted too.

And on top of it all he made a kazillion dollars with the whole damn
thing.

If it were only for children in the movie, it would have been impossible for
there to be any controversy over the adult Venezuelan (Argentinean?) casino
mogul who tried to win with the bogus 5th ticket.

And, on a similar note, he only finds the ticket when--DINGDING!!
FAIRYTALE KARMA ALERT!!--finds he has enough change to decide to buy
another bar for Grandpa.

Although it's interesting to note that he only was going to give it to his
grandpa when all the tickets were gone. When he realized there was still a
live one, he kept the bar and ticket for himself - and then invited his
grandfather as his guest.

Um, no:
The fake "fifth" ticket had killed the world mania overnight,

Obviously it was all a plan to flush Martin Bormann out of hiding nd
get him to return to Germany. Villy Vonka was actually a Nazi-hunter.
