I haven't traveled with gear for a number of years and the last time I did,
it went as a part of a large air-cargo shipment for our group...

I have a trip coming up where I am going to be bringing a number of
expensive things (mics, pres, recorders, etc...) to Sydney with me on the
plane. All will have to be checked as baggage because of size and weight.
What do those of you that travel by air do to make sure that your equipment
doesn't sprout legs and disappear?

I'm quite worried about this and even if I can get everything insured, some
of it isn't really going to be replaceable.

There really isn't anything you can do to safe guard your equipment anymore.
The TSA will probably open your cases and leave you a nice little red flyer
in the case informing you that they did this.

Secure your cases with ties but be sure to tape extra ties to the exterior
of your case. When the TSA is done they will secure your cases with the
ties you supply.

It's a leap of faith but that is about all you can do.

Personally I take digital photos of the contents of each case and bring them
with me when I fly. Probably worthless but it makes me feel better.

One thing of note... I've been travelling a LOT lighter lately....
basically, just less stuff - the essentials, fewer spares, fewer
options, etc. - haven't really suffered yet for lack of what might be
considered "excess"....

And, digital photos are your ONLY safety net - taken when the pack is
finished, and sometimes curbside at the airport for me! And -
definitely on both sides of the round trip.

If the TSA poorly repacks after rifling through your gear, and
breakage occurs, you do have some recourse when such photos can back
you up. This was verified through some phone research awhile back
when breakage DID occur for me, but I had NO photos to back me up.

On a good day, you can request that the TSA officer inspect the contents
IN YOUR PRESENCE, and then you can lock it up. They will label the case
has having been inspected with a tamper proof seal.
