If Andre de Toth had directed "Winchester '73" and Anthony Mann helmed
"Riding Shotgun", which would have been the better film?

The script's the thing. The brother conflict in "Winchester 73" is
simply more compelling a plot device than the false accusations on
"Riding Shotgun" - Not that directors are in any way negligible, but
the script for the later simply is not as compelling.
Also, and no offence to die hard Randolph Scott fans here, but a cast
with Scott, Wayne Morris, Joan Weldon and Charles Bronson in a small
role isn't exactly equal to Stewart, Shelley Winters, Dan Duryea,
Stephen McNally, Millard Mitchell, Will Geer, Jay C. Flippen and Rock
Hudson in a small role. |
