AMSTERDAM (Hollywood Reporter) - "Basic Instinct" director Paul
Verhoeven will publish a revisionist biography of Jesus in September,
following more than 20 years of research.

The Dutch filmmaker, who has had a lifelong ambition to make a film
about Jesus based on scientific research, claims that Jesus' father
was probably a Roman soldier who raped Mary during the Jewish uprising
in Galilee. He also claims that Christ was not betrayed by Judas
Iscariot.

Verhoeven decided to write the book to raise interest in his film
project. His publisher, Amsterdam-based Meulenhoff, is in negotiations
for an English-language translation.

Verhoeven, who turns 70 in July, has been a regular attendee of U.S.
scholar Robert W. Funk's Jesus seminars, which question miracles and
statements attributed to Jesus.

As if anyone would believe anything he says after the hack job he
did on Starship Troopers. I prescribe a large (7 ton minimum)
tinfoil hat and copious amounts of prescribed medication.

It's a theory that's at least 1500 years old -- probably older.

I've heard that theory years ago that Jesus was the son of a Roma
soldier. Well, it sounds like his film will be very interesting, and I
saw THE PASSION, so it can't be any worse than that. But good luck
screening anywhere. It'll be met with the same nonsense THE LAST
TEMPTATION OF CHRIST was met with.

Notice how Hollywood types never formulate a theory that says
something like Mohammed was a thief or that some Jewish sage was a
pedophile?
Christianity is always a target because you can criticize it without
fear of being murdered or being called a Nazi.

IMO the nonsense was that it was a great film.

It all depends on your beliefs, of course. We've been talking in a
separate thread about the way rape has been dealt with in films,
mostly in humorous references; if you or a closed loved one has been
raped, that is not the least bit funny to you, nor should it be.
Black people weren't fond of the way they were portrayed in most
Hollywood films of the '30s, '40s, and '50s, nor should they have
been. And Christians aren't fond of negative portrayals of themselves
or their Lord, nor should they be.

Put it this way. If a movie were made about someone you love dearly,
yet the film portrayed them in a negative light that you firmly
believed to be false, would you support the film or spread the news
that it was false? It really comes down to that, once you strip away
the emotional baggage that necessarily comes along with it.

Excuse me, but when has this man had time to do "research" in the last
20 years? He's been busy making Hollywood movies, from good (ROBOCOP)
to bad (STARSHIP TROOPERS) to gloriously demented (SHOWGIRLS). You
tell ME how someone involved in making SHOWGIRLS has got time to
research the life of Jesus.
