Starship Troopers was superb.

It's a superb black absurdist comedy. The problem is, Verhoven thinks

No he didn't.

Well, let's see. First, your reply makes no sense. Unless Verhoven is
dead. Second, whatever you meant, you're simply wrong.

Verhoeven decided to write the book to raise interest in his film
project. His publisher, Amsterdam-based Meulenhoff, is in negotiations
for an English-language translation.

Verhoeven, who turns 70 in July, has been a regular attendee of U.S.
scholar Robert W. Funk's Jesus seminars, which question miracles and
statements attributed to Jesus.

Obviously you never read the original book by Robert A. Heinlein.
His widow and literary executor, Virginia Heinlein, took
Verhoven^WVerhoaxer to court and successfully had her husband's
name removed from the film after seeing the extent of the hack.

Possible, I suppose. But I've always thought of Verhoeven as a minor
genius, and TROOPERS as a minor dual-masterpiece ...and I'd hate
having to demote either of those, much less both, to merely my own
invention.

I don't think his intention should lessen your opinion of the films at

hack at a sequel, and then it gets worse from there.

Fwiw, here's Wiki:

)

"On one level, the movie tells a straightforward action-adventure
science fiction story, but with plastic B-movie actors. ... Some
wonder whether the satire went unnoticed by an audience who may have
treated the movie as a simple gung-ho action movie..."

Re that latter point, e.g., Pulitzer critic Stephen Hunter wrote of
ST:

"It's spiritually Nazi, psychologically Nazi. It comes directly
out of the Nazi imagination, and is set in the Nazi universe....
Unlike films from a civilized society that see war as a debilitating,
tragic necessity ... this movie sees it as a profoundly moving
experience."

Verhoeven a Nazi? I can imagine him faking it at the expense of some
tunnel-visioned critic at a soiree... but actually *being* one? I'd
need (lots of) photos...

(Point being that, whatever else, the movie seems *not* to be it's
surface, even in Verhoeven's mind...)
