Orchestra to accompany German silent film
16:50' 29/04/2008 (GMT+7)

A scene from "Tired Death"
VietNamNet Bridge - "Tired Death", a silent film by famous German director
Fritz Lang, will be screened at the Hanoi Opera House on May 9 and 10
accompanied by an orchestra led by German conductor Pierre Oser.

Normally, classic silent movies are supported by only one violinist but this
time an orchestra will provide the music for "Tired Death". The orchestra
includes 24 musicians from the National Music Conservatory under the baton
of Pierre Oser.

Oser has composed music for the film, which will be introduced in Vietnam on
the occasion of European Days 2008. The score will consist of both recorded
and live music.

Conductor, music composer and producer Pierre Oser lives in Munich, Germany.
Besides composing music for silent films, he conducts performances of his
own music on many European stages and theatres. He also writes music for
plays and movies.

"Tired Death" will also be screened on May 12 at the HCM City Conservatory
of Music, 112 Nguyen Du, District 1.

Tickets are available free at the Goethe Institute, 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc,
Hanoi and 355/4 Dien Bien Phu, Ward 4, District 3, HCM City as of May 5,
2008.

Friedrich Christian Anton "Fritz" Lang (December 5, 1890 - August 2, 1976)
was an Austrian-German-American film director, screenwriter and occasional
film producer. One of the best known émigrés from Germany's school of
Expressionism, he was dubbed the "Master of Darkness". His most famous films
are the groundbreaking Metropolis (the world's most expensive silent film at
the time of its release) and M, made before he moved to the United States.

Destiny, or in original German, Der müde Tod, is a 1921 silent film directed
in Germany by Fritz Lang. The German language title literally means Weary
Death (in the sense of personified Death); the film was originally released
in the United States as Behind the Wall and in the United Kingdom as
Destiny, the title under which it has been reissued on DVD. The film, rich
in special effects, is structured as a frame tale with three stories within
the story.

In the Expressionistic frame story, in which human lives are each
represented by a candle, Death grants a woman three chances to save her
lover, if love can triumph over death. The three stories within the story
each occur in a setting that is nominally historic, but really in the realm
of fantasy: an adventure tale with a Persian setting out of the Arabian
Nights, a Renaissance Venetian romance, and a largely comic story set in
China.

Douglas Fairbanks purchased the American rights to delay its general
American release while he copied the effects of the Persian segment for his
1924 The Thief of Baghdad.

!!!! I always thought those piano and organ scores were a bit odd.

Well, the magical effects are in the Chinese segment; but I think we
can let that pass as a natural mistake.

This is a great film, and this should be a good show. I'm also curious
about the use of "some recorded music." Are they only going to play
every other scene? I suppose it's a way to give the orchestra a rest,
but it does strike me as a bit odd.
