Just would like to take a poll and see who is using what for 12v
distribution on the cart. Just looking into it and wondering who
would like to put there 2 cents in. Some of you might own products
from PSC, and others may do it a little differently. I know some
guys who just buy a 12v batt. and a separate charger, and wire it up.
Any thought and advice would be appreciated.

Have a look at a great new product from Hawk Woods,
(www.hawkwoods.com) it's a new distro unit that takes NP1's of any
chemistry and has 4 4pin XLR outs at 18v and then 4 hirose 4 pin at
12v regulated. It takes 6 NP1's and will give up to 1800watts of
power. I had one as a demo, it's quite well built and worked well, not
that expensive really.
It's about £250 in the UK,
Cheers, John McCombie.. |

1800 watts gives me how many Ahrs ?
I was thinking of getting more verbal input on the topic of having a
dedicated charger for a AGM or gel cells (12v) versus something like
the power max. Seems like a lot on the cart.
Price point for a great system?
Thanks again for your input.

Hi Brian,
let's reverse the way you to go through. if you'd like to power your
bag (for over the shoulder work) I would suggest Hawkwoods stuffs or
Remote Audio's BDS (here:http://www.remoteaudio.com/bds.htm) On a cart
work I would use HOT BOX (here:http://www.remoteaudio.com/hotbox.htm).
I'm using a modified Hawkwoods adapter, which runs on two NP-1s, they
are hot swap.
On my cart lies a custom made Hot Box like stuff w/10 4pin Xlrs, all
outs are individually fused w/ auto resetting breakers. The main power
source are two 33 Ah 12V Lead acid cells (of course hot swap), with
permanent chargers--if I have mains, they will charge both batteries
in 3 stages. 'Cos it is too hard to get a PSC Power Station here in
Hungary(customs, etc) I had to construct a powering system myself.
To determine how big battery do you need sum the power consumption
values of each stuff you want to run(mixer, recorder, wireless rx,
monitors, etc), then multiply with the number of the working hours you
think you need to work and you're ready: the value you got IS the
capacity of the batt you need in AmpHours.
I hope I could help. If you need more help, write to the forum or off
list as you like... )

A new solution, the long-awaited Meon, is now shipping.
I don't think there is another battery/power system suitable for sound
carts that uses less space or weighs less. Details here:
http://www.trewaudio.com/meon.htm.

Do the benefits justify the price? You could get a great 3 stage
charger for $200.00, a 50 ahr batt (although it would weigh around 37
lbs) for $175.00 and Let's say the Remote Hot box for $249.00
So let's say with some cabling you have a system that costs you
$700.00. Meon is just over $2000.00 before tax.

Well by your reasoning Brian we could all be working with Mackie mixers and
Octava mics and most likely do just fine and no one would be the wiser. If
you want the best, it's nice to know it's available and you probably only
have to buy it once. Would probably work great with a $10,000 Chinda cart!
Wow! is a Chinda cart THAT amount of money?!Love his work by the
way.Brian ,Ihave been using
a PSC powerstation for years now,and very happy with it (6v,12v,18,)
(Zoltan you can order one without a battery;will that clear it at the
border of Hungary?Gr. David C |

Actually, it's just under US$2000, and there's no sales tax when
shipped outside of Tennessee, Ontario, or British Columbia.
The Meon has several features that are unique and make power
management very easy, and all of these features, including the NMH
battery, are inside a small, lightweight package. The question of
value comes down to this: Is it worth an extra day's work (maybe two)
for years of increased convenience and peace of mind in a single
chassis?

Chinhda carts are expensive but the basic cart is $7500. It comes pretty
well equipped at that price - brackets for two monitors, disc brakes, shock
absorbing suspension, etc. It can swell to $10,000 if multiple accessories
are added.
David Waelder
They are definitely a work of art and very nice, and I would love to
have one, but $10K will buy a lot of Magliners and acessories!!
Never hurts to dream.
On another note, I ran across a vendor that sells isolation
headphones. Know nothing about them other than what I have read on
their website. If you need some, the price is in the low $100 range
for their top of the line model. www.extremeheadphones.com

Those are all valid points Glen. I was just weighing that out in my
head.... Hence the thread I have posted. Wondering guys if we could
keep the discussion to 12v system power, not carts and Headphones.
Note for Charles. The gear I mentioned does the same thing that a
Meon does. My reasoning has nothing to do with a Mackie and Octava.
I am a believer in Great gear and sparing no expense for quality that
lasts, but I think you were a little premature in thinking that the
system I mentioned is "cheap" in the sense of Bad Quality. All the
components I mentioned are top of the line.
Question to Glen. What Happens if I need to go all day without power
(AC) There is no external 12v input? The cart I want to build would
draw about 5 amps a 12v
Thanks again for your invaluable input.

Not really. In fact, not by a long shot. The system you described will
not safely float your batteries while also powering your cart. When
your batteries are fully charged, the charger will see the load of
your cart as a battery that needs to be charged, and continue to over-
charge your batteries. This will not only shorten the life of your
batteries, but can be very dangerous as your batteries expand. The
Meon safely charges it's battery while powering the cart. Also, the
system you described does not have a volt and amp meter. It is very
helpful to know how much current you are pulling, and the discharge
status of the battery. The Meon displays both. Also, the system you
described does not shut down to protect the battery from damaging deep
discharge. The Meon does.
Quote: Question to Glen. What Happens if I need to go all day without power

External batteries can be used with the Meon: The Meon can except
external batteries, float-charge and maintain them and distribute the
power. For example, if more battery capacity is needed than the
internal Meon battery, external lead acid batteries of any size can be
plugged into any of the 13A outlets and distributed to the remaining
outlets. When AC is available the Meon power supply will properly
maintain a fully charged lead acid battery at 13.8V. While the Meon
will float-charge a lead acid battery when AC is present, it would be
much faster to charge a lead acid battery with a dedicated properly
sized charger.

Brian you can make much simple solution using camera 190w li-ion brick
batteries with give you about 8 hours for 5 amp drown
together less then 3 kg , good for 400-500 complete charges
2 like that will hold you for production day
the distribution strip and power supply when you on ac
the benefit the same batteries could work in your bag ( I use 160w 1.2 kg)
much versatile and simple solution then lead acid
about meon its nice , but maybe be needed made with place for lion bricks
instead build in ni mh - was saving 10 kg at least :-)
