At that price the only real viable option is the Oktava. You can get a
full kit with a hyper and a cardioid for about $300 I think. Buy it
from the Sound Room in New Jersey only as they perform their own
quality control and others do not.
If you want something better than a Russian Schoeps knockoff you'll
have to spend some more money. Maybe you can find a used MKH-50 around
(I couldn't when I needed some about three weeks ago, other than a
couple of beaters from a rental house's backstock -- no thanks). You
could also try the Neumann KMR-150/184 series, and some folks around
these parts like the AKGs (do a google search on RAMPS as I don't use
these mics myself or follow their press). Even used, a Schoeps is
going to cost close to a grand once you buy capsule, preamp, and
filter.
One possibly good idea might be the Sanken CS-1 -- there have been a
lot of used ones listed around here lately for about $600-800 per. It
won't buy you a hell of a lot more coverage than the 60, but it is a
bit wider.
Of course, you understand that regardless of the brand, the wider the
pattern, the less vertical reach you are going to have.
Good luck!

the uls 480,63 combo is real nice maybe the best bandg for the buck if you
buy on gray market in europe:-) , has quit hot output and low cut filter
what bring the handling noise down.
the octava is super touchy for handling noise , need very good windshield
but it is very cheap - you don't need the omni capsule generally , so it
around 250 fo r 2 capsules .
Neumann 185 is also something to consider

Studio Projects will have a hypercardioid capsule within weeks. Samples have
already been delivered. I find these mikes highly satisfactory. They are
not as quiet as a Sennheiser, but neither is the Octava.

With all due respect, Bob. He needs something with a wider pattern if I read
his concern correctly.
BTW, if you want a middlin hyper now. The Audix SCX-1 is waiting for you.
It's not a Schoeps, but it doesn't cost as much either.
I'd much rather have one of them than an Octava.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The audix scx-1c seems like a mic
taht would suit my purposes. I called a distributor, and he gave me
another alternative in that price range. He recommended another
manufacturer that I have never heard of, although he said they are
somehow related to Neuman. Does anyone know of Gefell?
Hr suggested the Gefell M300. Again, thank you all for your input.

Yes they carry audix, and it is cheaper...audix scx-1c for $479.00 and
the Gefell is $690.00, both in my range as opposed to a Sennheiser 50.

I think the Audio Technica 4053 hyper cardioid is one of the most
undercelebrated mics there is for boom pole use. A true condenser with
approximately the same dimensions as a Schoeps. Of course, it doesn't
have what makes Schoeps the top choice, but in most situations it comes
surprisingly close.
Another good one is the AKG Blue Line with the Hypercardioid capsule.
It is an electret and does not seem to have the humidity sensitivity
that Schoeps and most other true condenser mics have. Without droping
any names here, I know of quite a few high profile big budget movies
that used the AKG Blue line for most car scenes. Quite inexpensive.
I've heard some amazingly good sounding Gefell mics (I believe they are
from eastern Germany) but knew of consistency and reliability issues a
few years ago. These are not what most would consider inexpensive.

I've got both the Audix and the 50. I love the 50 but the Audix is
becomming a new favorite. Another budget priced mic that I've have had
for years and like a lot is the AKG Blueline series. One advantage of
the modular Blueline series is the available swivel adapter and the
capsule extention cable. You really can't go wrong with either the Audix
or the Blue line.

by the way most of the hi end chiniz microphone industry is actually based
on geffel microphones and knowledge they get from engineers who was working
for geffel when it still was east Germany ,the biggest problems with these
are the quality control and luck of presys that the geffel and others has
when they produce the mics .
so I invested on some brand which makes mics for some very nice brand names
, esspesially in USA .
So if they are at least good as Octava i can guaranty you nice Factory
matched par with 6 capsules for less the 350 us $ so wait abit they
would be at my house in a week or 2 and maybe we can knock the prices down
..
AS a nime i thought about " BKM"
