Regarding the crooner who, I think, is supposed to be Sinatra who gets
helped in his career by Corleone, did Sinatra give his blessing to
that film? Did Coppola ask him if he could be portrayed? I suppose I
should really be asking did Mario Puzo ask permission to write about
it in the first place? I don't remember all the details of the book:
it's been a few years.
Also, was there really a bandleader who got threatened at gunpoint,
and a studio boss whos pet got got at? |

I've heard that the crooner portrayed in The Godfather, was based on the
singer Tony Martin not Sinatra.

And Martin was so good in From Here to Eternity.

Well for one thing, Tony Martin was Jewish.
Also, the character was inspired by another great show biz rumor, that Sinatra
got out of his contract with Tommy Dorsey by having gangland aquaintances, er,
influence him.
[As for the horse, it's reminiscent of an incident in The Public Enemy (1931)
that was inspired by the death of a real-life gangster in the 20s, but I can't
recall his name.]
While Sinatra publically attacked the project (the usual Joe Columbo "The Mafia
is a myth and slanders all Italian-Americans" bullshit), according to Mario
Puzo Ol' Blue Eyes went to Coppola and asked to play the role of Vito
Corleone! |

There's plenty of good Sinatra-mob gossip, but not pertaining to the
"bandleader" or FHTE legends. Even Kitty Kelly couldn't dig up anything
mob-related in the stories of how Sinatra broke his contract with Tommy Dorsey,
or how he got the role in FHTE.
Dorsey let Sinatra go for $50,000 -- an astronomical sum in those days -- and
claimed a percentage of Sinatra's income for years thereafter. If that was
arranged by the mob, they did a lousy job of it. And Sinatra got the role in
Eternity by begging Harry Cohn for the part, having Ava Gardner intervene for
him, and agreeing to work for scale.
The entire business made for a good story in The Godfather, but it was just a
story. If you have evidence to the contrary, let's hear it.
Sinatra couldn't have been too upset over the film. He was interested in
playing the role of Don Altobello in Godfather III.

Also Eli Wallach dropped out of the film at the last minute leaving the studio
with no option but to use Sinatra.
Johnny Fontane plays a more prominant role in the novel and is a sympathetic
character.

Public Enemy was based on real-life Irish-Polish gangster "Hymie" Weiss, a
crazy sumbitch that reportedly was the only man Capone was truly afraid
of. (Capone eventually got Weiss killed, after Weiss nearly pulled off a
hit on Capone that practically levelled a Chicago restaurant, but it took
a few tries before he got him.)
Weiss isn't as well known as his protege Bugs Moran...has anyone played
him in a film?

Ralph Meeker played him the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

Really? I haven't seen that portrayal...I can see Meeker in the part
though. Who plays Capone?

No, I'm not talking about Cagney's character, I was referring to the incident
of a horse being "hit". This supposedly really happened in New York (NOT
Chicago) in the 20s after a gangster was from thrown from a horse and killed.

Weiss appears in both Al Capone (1959) and the St Valentitne's Day's Massacre
(1967). You can check IMDb for the rest -- although I'm willing to wager Weiss
made at least one appearance on The Untouchables TV show.

Well, yeah, but I was using a dial-up PINE server at the time and couldn't
access IE or Netscape.
Mercy buckets.

I mean, it wasn't sheer laziness or an ongoing obsession with the
plots of V*c M*rr*w films or anything like that. |
