Trying to remember a movie I saw on TV when I was a kid, which means during the
50's or 60's. It was set during WW2 I believe, definitely during pre-TV times
when radio was the primary home entertainment. The main plot point that I
remember was a violent storm occurring one night after which God speaks to the
frightened people over the radio, warning them to start treating each other
better. Much debate ensues around whether the broadcast was a hoax or not. I
picture William Bendix as one of the characters, but this may not be correct. I
did not seem to find any likely movie titles in his filmography. Anyone know
this film?

Sounds like James Whitmore in The Next Voice You Hear but I've not seen it
in about 40 years so I'm not sure.

Absolutely has to be _The Next Voice You Hear_ (1950), a classic of the Cold
War. The stars were James Whitmore and Nancy Davis (two years before she
became Mrs. Ronald Reagan). I haven't seen it for decades but it lives
rather vividly in my memory. The film climaxes with the fall of the Soviet
Union and the Patriarch of Moscow proclaiming democracy, Christianity etc.;
I remember thinking, yeah, like that's ever going to happen.

I've never seen THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR, although I recall reading somewhere
that you, the viewer, never actually get to hear "God" on the radio - you're
just told about it.
As for the overthrow of the Soviet Union - that sure sounds a lot like RED
PLANET MARS, which I *did* see. |
