Just acquired one of these in order to experiment a little with 16mm...

Wondered if any more experienced users could pass on a few tips?

My camera came with a short roll of scrap stock. Idela for learning how to
load the thing properly. I downloaded the instruction book from NCS. The
threading instructions suggest that if the pressure plate 'pulses' then the
advance claw is not properly engaged. But even manually ensuring the claw is
in the film the plate vibrates..... Adjustments to the loop make no
difference HOWEVER when the cover button is pressed (which has the effect of
withdrawing the plastic loop formers, the plate rides quietly on the
film........

Obviously I haven't run real stock through the camera nor do I want to 'till
I've mastered loading it properly.... I noted that some 'krassys' have these
plastic loop formers removed.

....Am I correct in assuming that so long as the plate doesn't pulsate with
the plastic formers in the way all is well with the film advance???

Any other comments or advice would be appreciated....

TIA

The pulldown claw will not work properly as long as the loop formers are in
place.

Push the plunger and run the camera. The loops should remain intact if the
claw is engaging them correctly.

However, when you release the plunger to close the lid, the loop formers
swing back into place, and it is possible that the loops may be lost when
you run it again. This uncertainty, I think, is one of the reasons that many
users remove the loop formers.

How did you go about removing the loop formers? Did you just break
them out or did you remove the outer plate to unscrew them from
underneath? Do you recommend seeing how the camera you have bought
works before removing the formers? The one I got is in near mint
condition and I am loathe to mess around with it unless it is
necessary or at least highly recommended.

Seems to me that some people just break them off. Taking the camera apart
and removing the entire heavy spring loaded plunger assembly is probably the
best thing since the plunger has a stiff enough spring that it pries the lid
open a little, which could conceivably cause a light leak.

However, getting the camera back together again is very difficult. There are
little pawls or something that must be held in position while attaching the
main plate... but, you can't reach them any more when the plate is almost
seated. There is probably some trick to it that I don't know about. I
suppose the plunger could be cut off also.

I'd say try shooting and see if you actually have any problems, before
butchering the camera. I might point out that the loop formers in a Bolex
have precision adjustments to them and are made out of metal, as opposed to
non-adjustable plastic.

So difficult that mine has been sitting unassembled for ten years now! Don't
do it...
