I've been told that a good cameraman might also undercrank for
perhaps a quarter of a second during a screen punch, to make it
appear faster and more energetic on viewing -- as well as to help
disguise the 'faked' nature of the (non-) impact.

I can't imagine a cameraman undercranking for a quarter of a second.

How so?

You're turning a crank, and you're going to physically slow it down and
get it back up to speed in a quarter of a second, and time this so that
the one frame you're trying to skip comes at the moment of impact of a
fake punch? And ruin the stunt if you screw up? It's just not going to
happen. If you need to drop a frame that badly, you could do it in the
lab.

And to drop even a single frame, you'd have to come to a complete stop
and back up to speed again in that 1/4 second. 1/8th down, 1/8th up.
You're talking about jamming the thing to a halt and back up again. If
you didn't jar the camera, you'd probably strip a gear -- IF you could
even overcome the momentum of the camera to do it, which I seriously
doubt. And if you did, you'd probably rip a sprocket hole out of the
film itself.

And the exposure of the film is going to change. As you undercrank, you
let more light hit the frame. So you're gonna need to desperately spin
the iris down and up again.

None of this is going to work.

I'm so glad to see "Away From Her" and "The Namesake" on a top ten
list other than mine! They both stuck with me for a long time. I
particularly like how each established a sense of place-- both
geographically and within the families. Both lovely and heartbreaking
films.

My ten:

Away From Her
Once
Waitress
The Namesake
Gone Baby Gone
I'm Not There
No Country For Old Men
Sweeney Todd
Juno
Atonement

THE MOST OVER/UNDERRATED FILMS OF 2007
Copyright 2008 Steve Rhodes

Continuing with the tradition that I started many years ago, I am sending
out a list of what I consider to be the most overrated and underrated
films of the year. A film in my overrated list doesn't mean necessarily
that I disliked it but that I feel that it did not deserve the amount of
praise that it got. And conversely, an underrated/overlooked film is not
necessarily one that I loved but one that I feel did not get the amount of
praise that it deserved. Or maybe most everyone liked it, take Enchanted
for example, but few loved it the way I did.

If you want to read my reviews, you can find 3,300 of them at my web site:
InternetReviews.com. I also maintain an email distribution list to which
I send out my new reviews. Drop me a line at
Steve.Rhodes@InternetReviews.com with the word "subscribe" in the subject
line if you'd like to be added to the list. It's free.

My list of 2007's most overrated films (beginning with the most
overrated):

1. Margot at the Wedding (R)

7. Knocked Up (R)
8. I Am Legend (PG-13)
9. A Might Heart (R)
10. No Country for Old Men (R)

My list of 2007's most underrated/overlooked films (beginning with the
most underrated):

1. Across the Universe (PG-13)
2. Enchanted (PG)

4. Mr. Brooks (R)
