It must be one really big fat stinkeroo if you have to spam newsgroups to
promote the turkey. And you must be pretty pathetic yourself to do the
spamming with a false name.

³Expiration is the stuff we dream about as critics...a
rich, bountiful film filled to the brim with popping
ideas and a sensual visual palette. We may have
the first major work of the Student-DV Film New Wave"

---- Rick Curnutte, The Film Journal

TORONTO (Sunchaser Pictures) Produced on a microscopic
budget by an exuberant crew of Montreal college
students, EXPIRATION has seemingly managed to
accomplish the impossible, with a film VARIETY calls
³Frequently stunning..a canny combination of
intriguing situations, nifty Montreal locales and
intelligent mood spinning..²

Filmed on digital video over a mind-boggling 29
months, the story behind EXPIRATION has garnered
almost as much attention as the film¹s fictional
narrative, clearing the way for a new breed of
independent film.... the ³zero budget epic². Complete
with mechanical panning devices constructed from LEGO,
Scotch Tape Tripods and high speed police chases, the
simple purity of Gavin Heffernan¹s diehard Sunchaser
Pictures team has come at a time when Hollywood seems
to need it the most. Varied Celluloid writes ³In
making a feature film for such a small budget and
hitting it out of the park, Heffernan and his rag tag
crew of unpaid companions are truly inspiring for
anyone who loves cinema²

A botched wedding proposal between two smalltown
youngsters quickly spirals into an endless Montreal
night of chaos, confusion and destiny. Part OLost in
Translation', part 'American Beauty', EXPIRATION
stares straight into the dreams and nightmares of
childhood, leading both character and audience deep
into the heart of an unflinching urban fairy tale.
Featuring a starmaking performance from Janet Lane
(Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) this surprisingly
original coming of age odyssey from newcomer Gavin
Heffernan follows three lost characters through a
circus of tests, trials and colorful figures. As their
futures materialize, realization dawns that every step
of their journey has been leading to a single moment,
high above the city...

Following rousing New York and Los Angeles press
screenings, crowds and critics have responded to
this zero budget DV feature with overwhelming praise.
Covering Expiration¹s Canadian Premiere at the
Victoria Independent Film Festival, BC Critic Jakob
Brzovic writes ³Expiration marks a turning in the age
of digital filmmaking. We knew it was eventually going
to turn out a great film, and this is the picture. The
performance by Janet Lane is enough to make you fall
in love with movies all over again.²

PRESS QUOTES

³A genuinely involving story, effortlessly told and
undeniably effecting by the time it arrives at its
unlikley conclusion... Heffernan¹s a damn smart writer
and EXPIRATION is the exciting start to what should be
an exciting career.²
- Ain¹t it Cool News

³The textured, painterly digital video cinematography
is downright gorgeous at times; coupled with the
haunting, ethereal score by Jon Day and the rhythmic
editing, EXPIRATION often achieves a beautiful sense
of poetry. Heffernan is a natural-born filmmaker...I
bet we'll see more from him and the other talented
people involved in this production in the future. And
we'll be amazed.²
- Flipside Movies

³Breathtaking Cinema... Leagues better than 90% of
films churned out by respected Hollywood
professionals...EXPIRATION exudes raw talent on both
sides of the lens and serves as an unwitting document
to the purity of vision embodied by artists at the
beginnings of their careers, before fame and fortune
have affected their judgment and creative output.²
- Film Quips Online

³Probably the best Canadian movie of 2003... If
EXPIRATION is the future of digital video filmmaking,
count me in and get me a front row seat. I want to be
a part of the future.... Heffernan¹s direction is
second to none...One of the best inexperienced casts
you¹ll ever witness. The performance by Janet Lane is
enough to make you fall in love with movies all over
again..²
- Jakeopolis

³With its artistic camera shots and almost dreamlike
atmosphere, Expiration boasts a unique cinematic
style.. It's refreshing to see such excellent work
from a relatively unknown group of actors... Most
importantly, Expiration introduces us an impressive
new filmmaker in Gavin Heffernan.²
- Reel Talk

In an era when so many up-and-coming filmmakers are
playing it safe, Gavin Heffernan should be
applauded... Clearly inspired by directors like
Fellini, Polanski, and Paul Thomas Anderson,
Heffernan turns Expiration into a memorable and
undeniably captivating visceral experience
- Reel Film Reviews

³Refreshingly, this is a film which centres on people
rather than powder; on love rather than sex, using
inner strength as opposed to sporadic outbursts of
bloody violence; a credit to the literate script and
some outstanding performances from a team of
professionals and amateurs. A quietly large
achievement, and one that deserves your attention.²
- The Spinning Image

³A suprisingly entertaining film...Heffernan shouldthank his lucky stars
that he's blessed with such a stellar cast of unknowns. You could watch
100
films produced on moderate budget and never run across this kind of cast.²
- Nixflix

³Hypnotically entertaining....Heffernan's work on
Expiration demonstrates the true potential of digital
filmmaking. The overall look is quite impressive,
rivaling that of many traditionally filmed Hollywood
productions....featuring some of the best principle
and ensemble performances of any movie this year,
independent or otherwise.²
- A.J.¹s Movie Reviews

³An intriguing web of a movie with a cast so skilled
that it¹s impossible to tell the rookies from the
pros. This is indie filmmaking the way it¹s meant to
be - unique, clever, nothing like you¹d get from the
Hollywood machine.²
- Amazing Colossal ³Made with lots of care
and
more than a little talent,
EXPIRATION should garner respect from other big-time
wannabes. More than that, it's an exceptional film
that really deserves professional attention. These
filmmakers don't need 'encouragement' - all of the
creatives at work here are ready for bigger things.²

- DVD Savant

³Janet Lane and Denise DePass both exhibit real star
power....Energy and enthusiasm flow naturally from
Heffernan¹s palpable youthful exuberance, and his
mastery of camera technique and pacing are even more
astonishing...they seem to be the work of someone
twice his age. Someone in Hollywood take note: this is
the guy you want to hire.²
- Mixed Reviews

³A surprisingly potent independent feature that¹s
intelligent without being pretentious, visually
confident without showing off and hip without sweating
it. ³
- Montreal Film Journal

³Fabulous..This is a film that will not be forgotten,
it will reside in your subconscious and conscious
minds for the rest of your
life" Linear Reflections

Hi L.G.
I have a question on the VCI "Captain Midnight" serial and was just wondering if you have watched it as yet
Tried watching it last night and it acts strange - like wobbly and trying to
jump sprocket holes.

It almost looks as if the film is warped and when it runs through a
projector it will seem to bob or wobble as it is being shown.
it is both discs that are acting like this
Thought it might be the player but it does it on another player also
Just wondering if you have had this problem also
And lookat the main titles - it looks as if they are title cards
doesn't look like the rest of the Columbia serial titles
Maybe it's me - but of all the serials I have gotten from VCI this one seems bad
Your Opinion??
Thanks in advance

I have watched the whole thing and there is nothing wrong with my copy
as far as jumps, wobbles or the like. You may have a warped disk or
there may be something wrong with your player. The main titles are
static. I am not sure if this is how they were originally or if they
had to be reconstructed. This is, in my opinion, one of the better
VCI serials since it is not as dark as many of them are.

Hey there! Sorry, even Gravys take breaks sometimes from cyberspace.

Yep, you've got a bad disc there, alrighty. Mine plays fine.

As mentioned, the opening titles have been "restored" by using stills
of the credits rather than the originals. Some sort of technical
difficulties with the beginning of each chapter, I guess. I don't
recall if the VHS release was the same way, but remember, this serial
was "lost" for about five decades!

Here's a question - In which serial did the *first* sci-fi weenie appear?

According to Denis Gifford, the term 'weenie'(plot gimmick) is used
for Poverty Row, as opposed to it's synonym 'McGuffin'.

So, apparently, there's a certain amount of snobbery when it comes to plot gimmicks!

Thanks for the excellent review -- even if you did cheat and watch it
in one sitting, you stinker, you.

I have seen very few of the Republics of the late '40s and 1950s;
there's just too many good earlier serials to be watched, and I find
for the most part that the latter Republics are very boring. I have a
couple that I find very enjoyable, though: RADAR PATROL VS. SPY KING
is actually a good serial, and FLYING DISK MAN FROM MARS and RADAR MEN
FROM THE MOON are at least good for laughs.

I grew up with those, on the big screen of the last theater in Buffalo
that showed serials. Even as a 12-year-old I knew they were stupid
(actually, I noted the downhill progression from King of the Royal
Mounted to Canadian Mounties vs. Atomic Invaders), but if they had been
boring I wouldn't have put up with a 2-hour bus ride every Saturday to
get there.

The very first serials I saw were Universals, and I simply decided these
were two totally different classes of product and let it go at that.

I saw Phantom Legion too on video a while back,it's got a lot of stock footage
from older serials, especially for its cliffhangers.
