Hi All,
I wanted to thank everyone who answered my questions about mic boom
length. The advice was most appreciated and helped me make my decision.
After convincing myself that I could get by with a shorter reach, I had
two situations (a crowded office and a frog pit) where the extra length of the
pole I was using came in handy. Especially after the night in the frog
pit, I chickend out and went with a longer K-Tek.
Once again, thanks.

Marty whats the benefit for me ?<<<<<<<<<<<
Well for starters how about:
A good warm feeling that you have done something that will benefit all
mankind.
People will erect monuments to you and speak of you in hushed reverent
tones.
National holidays will be celebrated in your honor world wide. Rose
petals will be strewn in your path as you walk and your name will be
synonymous with goodness, caring and compassion forever.
From then on a good unselfish deed will be known as doing someone a
Kaizerman.

They are interested in your experiences with their mics, why you chose
them for a project (or your kit), etc, on projects people might
recognize. They won't ask for pictures to prove it.

Can I tell them about all the COS-11 mics in my drawer that have cable
problems at the bottom of the mics after about one year of use, and
about how I was silly enough to keep replacing them? I am now
exclusively using B6 mics instead !!

Jeez, I've been calling an "unselfish deed" a Kaizerman ever since
Oleg slipped me that 50 bucks.
The great thing about giving feedback to the manufacturers and dealers
on the products they sell is that sometimes they actually appreciate
it. The really focused ones will use it to make appropriate changes
in their products to benefit those of us working in the real world of
Film/TV/everything else.
Plus, often times the manufacturers will kick you back some swag or
let you preview/demo a product in advance. Although, I think I have
enough t-shirts to last me til I'm dead and beyond.
The only Sanken product we are using at the moment is the COS-11 which
is a staple of our mic inventory. We've had some in use for at least
5 years and they have been extremely reliable. We have always been
happy with the sound of the COS-11 and the ability to use them in many
hidden applications.
The one thing I have disliked about them is the mic clips. First of
all they are damned expensive (as are most of their accessories)
compared to other manufacturers. Second, the back side of the mic
clip is not smooth and when clipped to something thick like a suit has
on more than a couple of occassions ripped threads from the talents
clothing.
I can't explain how well that went over on the $3000 Dolce and Gabana
suit of a certain female media magnet who is off for a stay at federal
prison. If not for what she did regarding insider trading, its
definetly well deserved for the way she abused our A2.
Not sure if this is what your looking for Marty.

A few years ago I did a film called 'Joe Gould's Secret'. During one setup
on the NY waterfront, Ian Holm and Stan Tucci were goofing around between
takes while the stills guy snapped a couple of photos. Just before the next
take I noticed Ian's mic (a Sanken) poking out of the knot of his tie, so I
had my cable guy re-dress it.
About a year later the film opens in New York and I open the Sunday Times to
a full page ad for the film. There's Ian Holm and Stan Tucci on the
waterfront. At least 1/2 the Sanken is clearly visable poking out of Ian's
tie. Over the next few days I saw 3 different shots from that still
sequence. All had the mic poking out. In the 3 color glossy magazine ads
you can even see that I wasn't using the wind screen. |

I think it's pretty safe to say if you only have one pole you will find more
situations where you wish you had more pole than situations where you wish
you had less. A 12 or 13 foot pole is the happy median as far as I'm
concerned. |

How have the COS-11's aged in relation to each other? Meaning, when you A/B
a few of them after a couple of years do they sound similar to each other or
have they drifted apart in their qualities? |
