Here's some newer ones (2000 till present)...
American Psycho
Hamlet
Hidalgo (new release)
Runaway Jury (new release)
Collateral (new release)
Passion of the Christ (new release)
American Psycho (2000). "There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman. some kind
of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory.
and though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh
gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably
comparable... I simply am not there".
This movie is funny and chilling at the same time, Patrick Bateman (played
by Christian Bale) is the American Psycho. A young, successful man with an
incredible physique. Women may not like the violence depicted, but they
should admire his body.
This movie really surprised me. I think I need to own it. The humor is
subtle, but parts really cracked me up. The suspense is intensified by the
casual mood. It's some good work by director Mary Harron.
In the end, you may be confused. I was. It's not that it doesn't make
sense, it's just that you wonder how it couldn't have happened, if it did,
or how much is true. Definitely worth seeing. 7.5/10.
Hamlet (2000). No clue why I wasted my time. I'm not a fan of Shakespeare,
don't have the patience, and this whole movie appeared to be a modern day
version of Hamlet as everyone talked like they were in a Shakespearean play.
My attention span did not last. I think women who like Ethan Hawke and
especially those who like and appreciate Shakespeare will like this, but who
knows, there may be some Shakespeare fans who think this is a shameless
interpretation. All I know is if you're not into Shakespeare, you'll
probably hate it as much as I did. 4/10.
Hidalgo (2004). Viggo Mortensen is Frank Hopkins, but the star of this
movie is his mustang horse. Frank enters himself in a race across 3,000
miles of desert on a horse who probably shouldn't be racing. It's pretty
unrealistic, but I like Hopkins' horse. I also like the scenery and look of
this film. It's worth seeing, but you'll probalby agree it's not all that
believable. In fact, there's a part later in the desert that's pretty
ridiculous. Nonetheless, I think it's worth seeing once. Roeper says it's
cheesy, corny, and over the top. Sure, I agree with that assessment, but I
still think it has a nice look and is worth seeing. They make you like his
horse. 6.5/10
Runaway Jury (2003). Nicholas Easter (John Cusack) cons his way onto a jury
in a high profile case in which the jury selection process is controlled by
Gene Hackman and many others outside the courtroom. They tab virtually
every aspect of the jury members' lives, but there is much to learn and they
do as they go. Easter's girlfriend Marlee (Rachel Weisz) works with him
from the outside to help him sway the verdict their way. It has its
moments. 6.5/10
Collateral (2004). Directed by Michael Mann. I just saw this in the
theater and I liked it quite a bit. Tom Cruise plays a pretty convincing
villian and Jamie Foxx does a good acting job himself. The story pulls you
along. For awhile, I wasn't sure what exactly was going on, but I also wasn
't trying to figure it out, I just sat back and enjoyed it. It's a good
thriller, but not a mind bender. Captivating. I don't like how the film
ends, it's just a typical Hollywood finish, but this is definitely worth
seeing... for the story, drama, and acting. I like it and will see it again
someday. 8/10.
The Passion of the Christ (2004). Okay, I could go on and on and on about
this film, but I'll be somewhat brief... there's been enough controversy.
I concur with crow_fanatic at imdb: this one film brought more emotion than
any of his/her top 10 films combined. "Fear, Pain, Anger, Bewilderment,
Disbelief, Hatred, Heartache, Shame, Agony, Anguish, Amazement, Passion,
Sorrow, Pride, Love, and a ton of other emotions ran through me during my
viewing".
Any film that can bring out all those emotions is worth seeing, I don't care
if you're religious or not.
This is a bold and powerful film. I thought the blood and gore people
talked about would be short lived and only during the crucifixion, but I
didn't realize that is what the movie is all about. I was fascinated. The
movie went by fast, I was sucked in. I see no reason not to give this a
perfect 10. The acting is superb. The story is basic, but obviously about
deep subject matter. The weak hearted should avoid. Those of you who worry
about the historical accuracy, who cares. I didn't watch it to get a
history lesson, I watched it for its entertainment value and any true film
fan will appreciate this. I praise Mel Gibson. 10/10 |
