I recently got a VHS copy of Pather Panchali from my local library.
It was put out by Hollywood Select Video.
The quality is awful-muddy, impossible to read subtitles, poor sound.
Looks to be a crude transfer. I can't believe the original could be
this bad.
Could some one recommend at least a decent watchable edition of this
fine film either VHS or DVD (prefered)?

I haven't seen it but unfortunately the Columbia TriStar DVD is
supposed to be of mediocre quality -- see blurry screenshots at

It's probably better than that tape, though.
I don't know what the problem was since there was a more than decent
theatrical restoration (of the trilogy and other Ray films) not all
that many years ago. |
