Michael Keaton debut-directs and stars in THE MERRY GENTLEMAN, an
indie thriller whose ambition slightly eludes its reach. Chief
missteps were ntrusive (albeit brief) soundtrack vocals, and the
miscasting of the usually welcome Bobby Cannavale (in a supporting
role). But these aren't lethal. And, tMG's nice attention to
photography, dialogue, and characters -- along with just enough
disdain for convention -- make it passable, watchable, etc. ...and
mostly recommended.
