Hmmm, thoughts. Well, let's take your note in reverse order. I, too,
wish we have more silents on the big screen in Tacoma, and as a
resident of the CIty of the Future for the past 6 years I have
continually been suggesting this to our four preserved historic movie
palaces. With the Blue Mouse trying out the concept on the
professional level with this anniversary screening of their opening
night film, THE GREEN GODDESS, half the work is now being done to
bring even more silents to the city . . . the other half is, of
course, attendance. So, if you are now thinking, from reading IMDB
reviews, of not attending the show, and still want to see more silent
films in Tacoma, you might want to think about other aspects of the
performance that might be of interest to you should you attend beyond
confirming opinions about the plot. Perhaps the fact that this print
comes directly from the preservation facility of the UCLA FIlm and
Television archive and is a fine demonstration of the quality of their
work - in this case a 35mm print taken from the only known surviving
copy of the film. And then consider their will be a live music
performance of a historically informed score assembled from period
published silent film music materials, as opposed of the region's
newly available meandering and anachronistic improvisations to silent
films these days. And then there's the singer opening the show with
the 1919 hit tune "Take Your Girlie to the Movies If You Can't Make
Love At Home." And if that's not enough excitement to entice a
dedicated silent film fan interested in more silents on the big screen
in Tacoma to attend what looks to be a sellout performance, come on
down to nearby Olympia, over to Bainbridge Island or even on up to
West Seattle for my other upcoming SILENT FILM CONCERTS next year
listed.

I saw it some years ago and thought it was very good. If you search for
The Green Goddess in the Google groups archive of alt.movies.silent,
though there are gaps you will find others who agree with me (as well as
some who don't). But there is no doubt that it looks great. I would
certainly recommend it.

I'm pleased to report THE GREEN GODDESS anniversary show screening at
the Blue Mouse Theatre in Tacoma, WA was a complete advance sellout.
The archive restoration 35mm print is beautiful - perfect tinting,
marvelous titling and only one sign of nitrate deterioration in the
over two hour film. My recreation score was filled with appropriate
"exotiques," and the debut of my restored and enhanced Hammond RT-3
went without a hitch. Plans are already well underway for November
13, 2010 to make this a committed annual event for us all - silent
films with live music . . . shown the way they were meant to be!
