SUPERMAN RETURNS, two decades in the making, the followup to SUPERMAN IV:
THE QUEST FOR PEACE (featuring brickvision), was at best a mixed success,
but mostly failure considering the length of production, amount of marketing
and general audience response.
However that can be turned around, buzz, excitement can be revived in the
franchise, tongues could be set a wagging, bloggers blogging about a new
Superman movie with 3 little words:
Starring
Jon
Hamm
Boom, there it is (as the kids ... useta ... say). For those who haven't
seen MAD MEN, Jon Hamm plays "Don Draper", an ad man, back in the 1960s, one
of the elites working for an ad company on Madison avenue in NYC (thus the
pun, "Mad Men"). He's a man's man, a ladies' man. He has a top-paying job,
downtown office, a movie-star-(Grace Kelly, wiki her, kids)-looking wife,
kids, nice home in the burbs, and women throwing themselves at him.
Yet it's an alias, covering his real identity, "Dick Whitman", a guy born
dirt poor to dirt poor folks, way on the wrong side of the tracks. He was
born to run, and that's what he did, always on the go from one place to
another, never settled, never satisfied, whenever problems arose, Dick
ran--but that was before the Korean War and a switch in dog tags with a dead
man and a new lease on life (which is revealed in the series pilot so it's
not spoiling anything).
For the past 3 years Hamm has been playing a man with two identities and
last week we saw in culminate to a major climax as with nothing but facial
expression and body language we saw Hamm change from Draper to Whitman. He
has the chops for the role.
More to the point, casting him in the titular role would generate buzz in
the entertainment media, the news media and the entertainment news media.
The work of marketing the movie would be halfway done for you, DC and WB.
Sure, he's only one person, he still needs a good script (after all, George
Clooney's role on ER was a superhero doc by day and playboy by night, but he
couldn't undo the horrible script of BATMAN AND ROBIN), one preferably with
so many plotholes the size of Krypton, but casting him would respark the
excitement, and that often is 2/3rds the battle in movies.
-- Ken from Chicago (inspired by Alan Sepinwall's recent review of MAD MEN)
http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/2009/10/mad-men-gypsy-and-hobo-conversation.html
P.S. Bonus, since he's been playing mostly on AMC (and a recurring role on
NBC's 30 ROCK), his acting fee would still be "reasonable". |

What, no nazis?
Rich doesn't want Hollywood posing those of the lighter complexion to
ever be posed as Villains, ever.
Now, if he'd actually _known_ or bothered to _learn_ anything about
the Superman mythos and ethos, he could have made a better showing of
himself.
For myself, seeing as how they (the film makers) seem to have stumbled
with the last go round; I say give the current lead actor another
chance.
With a better story and folks already familiar with his face it would
seem to be a better bet than projecting defeat and scrapping the last
one in favor of yet another 'do-over'.

The good ole boys of "Sons of Anarchy" are doing that. Besides,
Hollywood has enough fantasy Nazi villains. |

Or have him convert to Islam and fight the US. Can't have a movie
unless both sides are somewhat evenly matched :)

Certainly Hamm's story arc on 30 ROCK proved he can channel Chris
Reeve-as-Clark Kent.

That's a good reason to not do it right there. There is nothing in
Superman canon that says that the Kent character has to be that nerdy,
and in fact it is only in the Reeve films that he was portrayed that
way. In the comis, on the radio, Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, and even
the various animated versions have portrayed Kent as a fairly tough,
somewhat smartass reporter who just always happens to allegedly be in
the wrong place at the wrong time and gets "scooped" by Lois Lane,
except on the occasions when he files ahead of her to teach her a
lesson and leaves her wondering "Now how did he DO that?" The geeky
version of Kent from the 1st 4 feature films that began in '78 were
over the top and just prove that they were made by someone with no
respect for the source material.. |

Exactly. On 30 ROCK he shown he's just as good with the light comic touch in
a portrayal of Clark Kent the same way Chris Reeve did.
LIGHT comic touch? More like "bordered on parody, if we don't go
overboard with how different he is from Superman people won't get it" |

P.S. Natch, I think Kate Bosworth, who wasn't quite right as Lois, would be
even less so with Hamm as Clark / Kal-El. Bonus would be casting Christina
Hendricks as Lois. Hendricks and Hamm have shown that kind of easygoing
comfy chemistry onscreen that Clark and Lois should have professionally and
personally.
Jon Hamm already played Lex Luthor in a parody on FunnyorDie.com.
Actually very funny. |
