I have been asked to write a piece on capturing sound on location
while working in extreme conditions (cold, heat, rain, etc.) along
with equipment used and techniques to get the job done. If you would
like to be featured please contact me. Thank you

I once worked from the hatch/trunk area of a VW Golf, but from what I've
heard on this group, it hardly counts ;)

Yes, I have anextreme story.. one from going to the top of Mt. Whitney
with a hearty crew and the lightening
storm....but...I'd like to be paid for the story. One person died and
another shoes got blown off... with 3rd degree burns.

January 1988, Presidential primaries. We're shooting an Iowa farmer,
exterior, endorsing The Candidate.

It is the coldest day of the year, and we are about 30 miles from the
coldest place in the US that day. Fortunately there's no humidity, so
I'm not worried about condensation in the mic.

Get back indoors and check things. Sound is clean, and my Nagra had
performed perfectly...   but the mic cable was ruined! It was so cold
that the rubber insulation had cracked wherever it flexed. When I
uncoiled it to look, the insulation started coming off in big chunks.

Left the cable in the motel wastebasket. Went down to the bar for a
warming iced drink...

Jay, I'm betting the cable was that brown Belden stuff.

What a tragedy. But as long-time magazine editor and writer, I can say with
some authority that the only way you'll get paid for a written story about
that will be to write it yourself. And that is possible.

Best,

Jim
