It is with excitement and reflection that I put the very last two 442
mixers ever produced into our "museum" (a shelf in an equipment
cabinet). They join the first product Sound Devices ever produced, an
MP-1 (1999). The 442 is now discontinued, but will continue to thrive
with the many units that are in regular use all over the world.

There have been precious few pieces of equipment that
hold such a revered and esteemed place in my mind.
I've carried an early 442 for nearly 5 years and it never let me
down from the arctic circle to sub-saharan africa.
As promised, the 442 "improved" my work life.

That said, I am anxious for the arrival of my new 552
and Sound Devices continued legacy of innovative and
reliable gear.

Thank you Jon and the Sound Devices team.

One can assume that technical/repair support will continue for the
foreseeable future?

Hellava run Jon. Hope that it's "baby" brother has a similar illustrious
lifespan. Good work!

Yes. One can know that. Nothing's changed as far as service and
support. :)

Good question, would be interesting to know!

Regarding the Wendt X5, I dont think it deserves such harsh comments.
Bob Wendt (I've met Bob and he is possibly the nicest guy on the
planet) saw the need for a 5 channel location mixer and produced it.
Sure it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the 552 but it
served its purpose. I'm not trying to take anything away from the 552.
I have Sound Devices products (442, 302 & 744T) and love them but
there's no real need to slander the Wendt.
I remember a time when Wendt and the older PSC mixers were everywhere
long before SD and they too have proven to be reliable mixers. Its a
different era we live in and SD certainly has taken location sound to
another level.

Now that it's a discontinued "vintage" mixer does this mean the value on
eBay will begin to rise?

Congrats to SD on an extremely successful product within our little
market.
Speaking of early SD products--you are still making the MixPre, right
(bought
a new one earlier this year)?

Their www page shows their mixers as
552
302
Mixpre

So I guess they are still making the MixPre...

I have a Sound Devices 302 that I like a lot....and they're still making
those, as far as I can tell.

Just curious: what do you want or need to see in a three-channel mixer that
you can't find in the 302?

Jim

332 would be awesome - with a 2 track recorder and 3 direct outs (mini
552)
