Have a camera friend who always like to carry a small fan for extremely hot
interview shoots to keep subjects or correspondents comfortable. This often
comes at the expense of sound. Saw this new Dyson fan in the news and
thought it might be interesting to see how it might work out for that
application. There weren't any sound specs on the dyson site so I emailed
for information and share it here in case any of these futuristic fans start
showing up.

Thank you for your inquiry. The Dyson Air Multiplier(tm) fan reaches 64dBA
on its fastest and most powerful setting. When in the lowest power mode it
is at about 42dBA. This is comparable with other fans with similar outputs.

By all accounts, this thing is at least as noisy as a regular fan.

By Dyson's own admission, it's main selling point is the lack of
exposed blades (for safety and hygine issues), not that it's quieter
than a regular fan. Plus, it's $300, msrp.

Get better camera friends.

Never mind the obvious rant about yet another
noise maker on set:

I have a Dyson vac and love it, so I'm disappointed
by what seems like marketing hype.

So the blades are isolated in the housing?
Just because you feel air but can't see them,
doesn't mean they aren't there...
So they are still getting filthy in an enclosed housing?

I remember a knife back in the 70's that never needed
sharpening because "90% of the cutting surface never
touches what it's cutting!..."
