William H. Gates 111 before Microsoft
... Information Sciences Inc. hired them to program a payroll program ..
... Gates and Allen's next project involved starting another company
entirely on their own, Traf-O-Data. They produced a small computer
which was used to help measure traffic flow. From the project they
grossed around $20,000 ..
... the administration offered him a job computerizing the school's
scheduling system ..
... The defense contractor TRW .. offered Gates and Allen jobs .. and
it was there that Allen and Gates first started talking seriously about
forming their own software company [Wallace, 1992, p. 49-51] ...

Luck for bill that Digital didn't patent any source or derivative
rights on the PDP-10 else Microsoft would have never got off the ground. |

Why do people spend so much time discussing these idiots.

Hardly "idiots", John. Extremely effective entrepreneurs. |

When does having your Mom wrangle a contract from IBM make you an
'entreprenuer'?
I would call them 'inheritors' -- nothing more.

You can call them what you want, John, but that is not as compelling as what
Warren Buffett might think, eh?
I don't know any specifics, but I am sure that IBM provided hundreds if not
tens of thousands of $20K sized contracts to other companies in the same
timeframe as the contract for PC-DOS. Where are these companies today? As
to Ms Gates influence on the process, I think that has been shown to be
pretty much of an urban legend. It is popular with the anti-MS crowd in
their never ending petty attempts to denegrate Gates' success, but doesn't
appear to be very true. |

Nice gainsay.
But it doesn't change the facts.
They are /inheritors/ not /entreprenuers/.
That fact that they have to pay you to troll this newsgroup and make
their case even at this level is tribute to the pitifulness of Microsoft. |

Well the facts are that you put up some nonsense about KoolAid instead of a
rational argument. That seems to mean that you are out of aces, eh?

Sure, John, sure! $274B market cap all inherited from a rich daddy. Why is
linux so broke?

Do you really believe that? If you do, there is little hope for you! You
will be standing around the rest of your life worried about the next boogie
man, never knowing how to take control of your fate. |

Its about Gates throwing a tantum because IBM has the temerity to put

the IBM PC in the first place.

Right. And where would Microsoft be now if IBM had said to them, "Okay, we
don't want your steenkin' ripoff platform anyway! We'll use OS/2 and
Smartsuite, and fsck you and the horse you rode in on!"
The DOJ's theory of the case was that IBM could not make that threat since
they would have lost most of their PC business. IBM's Norris claimed to
have the same assessment. I don't think you have been paying attention,
Jim! |

Another way to look at this would be to say "where would all those users be
who bought IBM microchannel computers on them with OS/2." These guys would
have useless computers with an equally worthless OS/2 operating system.
By the time OS/2 came along Msft already dominated the desktop market with
DOS. OS/2 was too little too late to change anything. |
