I've got a little nettop connected to a 1600x900 display through an HDMI
cable. Both Fedora 14 preview and Ubuntu 10.10 are setting the resolution
incorrectly (1280x768). It uses the Intel 3150 graphics chip. Is there
any way to configure it to support the full resolution of the monitor?

1600x900 is not a very common resolution, you might have to write a
modeline in xorg.conf. There is a tool called gtf which might be useful:

$ gtf 1600 900 60 -x

# 1600x900 at (no spam) 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 119.00 MHz
Modeline "1600x900_60.00" 119.00 1600 1696 1864 2128 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync

At least some older intel chipsets needed a special tool to use non
standard resolutions:

http://915resolution.mango-lang.org/

I don't know if the 3150 chipset also needs something like that.

Thanks but it didn't help. I created an xorg.conf using Xorg -configure,
I then added a mode line using gtf and also added a FORCE BIOS option to
override the BIOS limit but the Monitors menu still doesn't over anything
over 1366x768.

You probably also need to tell which modeline(s) to use in the screen
section, something like this:

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1600x900_60" "1366x768" "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection

If adding modes to the display sections of your xorg.conf doesn't help
further investigations will be needed.
One good place to search for hints is the log file from X. In Slackware
that log file is placed in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

That didn't help. According to the log file it's probing for supported modes, is there
a way to force it to use the xorg.conf values?

This is not an area that I know well, but are you sure the monitor can
handle 1600x900?

That didn't help. According to the log file it's probing for supported

Yes

There it is, change the above line to something like:

Option "NoDDC" "True"

But before doing that you should probably also add HorizSync and
VertRefresh to the monitor section.

That didn't work, when I flipped on NoDDC I got a blank screen. It may be
that the 3150 really can't handle anything more that 1366x728.

What did the log file say with NoDDC? If it attempted to set the
resolution 1600x900 it is probably more likely that the graphics card
succeded in setting the resolution but you monitor is unable to use it.

What is the name and model of your monitor? Do you have any specifications
for the monitor?

The native resolution of the monitor is 1600x900,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254049

However the driver for the 3150 doesn't support ForceBIOS or NoDDC

If that option is not usable I suppose that you will need some standalone
tool like 915resolution. Somewhere on the web I saw something indicating
that 915resolution might have support for your chipset:

from:
http://www.meklort.com/?paged=2

-8<-----------------------------
Updated the (915)resolution code so that it supports more gpus (such as
the GMA 3150).
-8<-----------------------------

However, I don't know if he is talking about the 915resolution at
http://915resolution.mango-lang.org/ , the last version seems to be from
2007 and the blog entry was from 2010.
