The 4.7 gig DVD download is too slow. 150 to 200kbs is no good. I got
some 1.2mbs last night but it throttled right back down to 200kbs.
What gives?

How fast is your regular connection?

What kind of download? Might have better throughput with a torrent. Or
if that's what you're using try the ftp or http download.

Pick a different mirror?

My regular connection is 1.5mpbs on cable. I couldn't get torrent to
move either. I tried selecting mirrors manually and they are all
200kpbs. I ran a broadband test on my ISP and got 1.5 mpbs. Must be the
mirrors?????

and if you run a broadband test over a long period?
ISPs tend to throttle when they think you are being greedy.
The main server that provides you with a copy has no motive to slow you down.

Time warner might have their heads up their asses again. I just did 2
more speed tests. One gave me 400 kbps the the other gave me 6.5 mbps.
There is some bullshit going on.

Don't know how cable is there, but up here it's a shared pipe. I use
DSL which (in theory) means I get my alloted throughput, but the cable
users here are at the mercy of their neighbors surfing habits. Their
actual access times will vary at different times of day.

That's a pretty broad range though - maybe they are doing some
throttling. Hope you get it sorted...

Apparently it's my fracking router again. I got rid of my old Belkin
because of slow speeds. Now this Wireless N router is throttling my
download speeds down. If I plug into the cable modem directly it's ok.
Why is my router slowing things down?

I assume it's a wireless router - therefore the basic speed will be
considerably slower than a hard wired connection, and if there are any
other items locally using the same frequency, interference will up the
error rate. These might be other routers, TV video senders, microwave
equipment, etc. Try changing the channel your router communicates on -
this will often take your frequency away from all the other sources of
'rubbish' around.
