Is there a way to log to file the messages during bootup about services
starting, those that end with [OK] or [FAILED]?

I guess I should have stated my OS is CentOS 5.3.
There is a tool called bootlogd in Debian, which does exactly this, but
not in rhel afaik. |

Errors in services starting up should be logged in /var/log/messages
