Very doable, and easy, with two caveats. It will be noticeably slow running
from an SD card, and you should not expect suspend/resume to work.

Better, as it will run at a more normal speed, but still, suspend/resume
will not work. This is not a Slackware issue. It has to do with the root
drive being on the USB bus.

Is it reasonable to boot the Slackware install CD on another system
(with a CD drive) and install to SD from there and then try and boot the
SD in the EeePC? (I know, I really just just try it and see for myself,
but the SD, the EeePC, and my Slackware CD set are all at home right now
...)
That will work.

I'm reasonably comfortable with these aspects that they should not
present a problem if editting becomes necessary. Thanks.

I tried running Slax on a 8GB SD card, but for Slackware 12.2 I simply used
dd to take an image of the SSD drive (mine has the 16GB SSD) and did a fresh
install. Then I built a new kernel. If you've got 4GB only on the 700 you
may need to be more selective in what you install. The basic process was:
Image SSD drive
Standard install of Slackware 12.2
- ensure use ext2 for file system
- tweak fstab acordingly (can't remember exact option but google netbook,
SSD, fstab ought to get you there)
- Build and install latest kernel
- Get wifi on/off keys working.

Personally I found Slax, on both eee and desktop not to be noticably slower.
