kde3 to be masked...

Whose brilliant idea is it to mask kde3?

I've tried KDE4 at every minor release since 4.1 and it is still
garbage. Too many idiotic decisions have been made that reduce its
useablity to nil and in my opinion it is simply not ready. Some of the
nastier aspects I discovered in less than 8 hours of use:

konsole: no stable window size. Resize a konsole window and all
future windows take that size. Simply hatefull. If I resize a window,
I don't want all future instances modified. What it means is that
half the time I open a konsole, I have to resize it.

Missing settings. I can't have the window manager perform actions
depending on the application. Can't have a particular application
show up on all desktops, or be sized a certain way. Konsole has
settings for colors but little else.

No bluetooth manager.

No desktop. Insanity! Everything is shoved inside a window. I can
drag icons outside the window, but they remain in the window and
there's no obvious way to get rid of the window. Reminds me of
windows 3.1, or perhaps a very old version of CDE.

No way have a large and small menu bar on the same edge of the screen.
I use a large one at the bottom for a few important items like the
desktop switcher, task list, kmenu, etc. I use a small one
immediately above it for application launchers and I have about 25 of
them up there. Can't do this in kde4.

I guess I'll just unmask kde3. Hopefully gentoo won't make too many
other poor decisions regarding kde3 and make it unuseable.

Maybe it's tine to switch to gnome, or to another distribution.

Thanks for the heads-up. My missing hardware is being supplied today
and if all goes well, then I may (re)start on the Gentoo installation
today.

(Hmm... Just got a call as I'm typing this: the hardware will be
supplied tomorrow due to time constraints today.)

This is something that I've read about in another group. It's still
possible to have icons on the desktop but the mechanism is different.
You have to add a plasma applet with "folder view" or something, which
will then have some sort of translucent appearance. (Note: I hate the
word "folder", because people only started calling directories folders
because of MICROS~1.)

That will of course remain to be seen... :-/

Sabayon is Gentoo-based, but I haven't really checked their package
list, so it's possible they supply KDE 4 as well, although I /believe/
that their default desktop environment is Gnome.

I myself have recently also been looking into NexentaOS, which is the
GNU userland with the OpenSolaris kernel and C library. The package
management and set-up is based upon Ubuntu, but what I find interesting
about it are the Solaris Zones, ZFS, and the fact that it also supports
running in a Xen dom0/domU, but then again, they're all binary packages
and of course, then it won't be "Linux" anymore.

They use the GNU userland (minus glibc) but OpenSolaris is CDDL, not
GPL, and that sort of goes against my FOSS activism and my loyalty to
Linux, the kernel. I will agree that RMS is sometimes a little too
pedantic about things, but he needs to be, because if he isn't, then
people will be walking all over the GPL - and some are trying to find
loopholes or perverting things anyway, which is why GPLv3 was drawn
up - and my ethical alignment with regard to Free & Open Source
Software leans over closest to the GPL(v3) and the Free Software
Foundation - more than, say, the BSD or MIT licenses - so it doesn't
feel "right" to suddenly exchange the trusted and powerful Linux kernel
for an open source project from a big corporate vendor.

And well, the fact that NexentaOS uses binary packages bugs me too.
That was the main reason why I had my mind set on Gentoo. Now, I need
a system with "zones" (or "containers") anyway for one of my Xen domUs,
so perhaps I will install Nexenta in that domU but keep the rest
GNU/Linux. I don't know yet. I'll check out how well Gentoo handles
an OpenVZ setup first before I'll try Nexenta.

Myself I finished a Gentoo install at work, really an image for our customers
to deploy Gentoo VMs :)

I have installed KDE4 on my laptop, as it's not multi X, so it don't matter so
much. Applying plasma icons lacks options to allow define where to execute it
and the old way of applying options are gone.

The question is how long will it be there, I remember gnome disappeared quite
fast in favor to crappy gnome2.

I did download it and was trying to install it, it ended with that I booted
into the desktop environment and failed to find any installer and the web page
was as good as an evening tabloid for news.

I think it was Gnome2 they used, but they should have the same packages as you
find in Gentoo and wouldn't be surprised if KDE4 is default KDE nowadays.

I've settled down a bit. I'll probably start using gnome until kde4
matures out a bit. I did the same thing when kde 3.x first came out.

I just don't understand what the kde people are thinking when they make
really idiotic decisions. Do they even use their desktop for real work?

The gnome2 devels aren't any better, now they included mono as part of gnome2.

I'm also not quite happy yet with kde4. Qt4 doesn't support some keys
which already worked without problem in Qt3, transparent panels are only
available with Composite (and that's slow on my old Radeon card), and
there are drawing artefacts even without Composite.

A bit of info about that masking was posted in the 2009-11-02-kde-3
"eselect news". There's also a kde3 overlay.

I guess it's supposed to work just as in KDE3, at least I can see the
same settings in the title bar right click menu. Most of the times these
settings work. In systemsettings in the last icon (don't know the
English name for it, perhaps keyboard shortcuts) there's also the
possibility to start programs after a window has appeared. You could use
wmctrl or xwit with that as a last resort.

ACK.

I considered that, too, but next year they'll switch to Gnome 3 and
I left Gnome when they switched to Gnome 2.

I only expect to switch to gnome for the time period between kde3
being unuseable and kde4 being made useable.

dot zero releases universally suck. I don't know why kde4 has been so
long to mature. It still has the look of something cobbled together with
little thought to the end user.

I indend to and keep using 3.x until the bitter end. However, with the
news about kde3's support ending, I don't expect 3.5 to keep working for
much longer, unmasked or not.

Hmm, I don't think that they're going to break it, but rather that
the "end of support" means "we're not going to be fixing any more bugs
in it or apply any patches to it".

I don't think KDE 3.5.10 will ever really disappear until at the very
least KDE 4.x has its act together, and by that time they may even
already be working on KDE 5.0. ;-)

Unfortunately, only MICROS~1 starts with odd-numbered releases. Wink

Actually, I really like kde 4. I think it's a huge improvement over
3.5.10 which I found to be clunky, slow and *still* buggy.

Navigating multiple desktops is a breeze with the new integrated
compositing desktop. My opinion is that it is polished and attractive.
Your opinion is obviously different so:

KDE 3 Removal

Currently KDE 3.5.10 is masked for all architectures, as it is being
removed from Portage.

The KDE team has been cleaning up the various KDE 3 applications by
removing them from the tree, as they are too old, broken and
unmaintained, and by dropping arts support (with major help from
Media/Video teams). When this task is finished, we are going to drop
arts from base KDE 3 as well.

While using KDE 3 is not recommended due to security and bug concerns,
if you must install it, you can find it in the kde-sunset overlay.

================================================================

The kde-sunset overlay will be community maintained, I guess.

I wish to thank the KDE developers for their efforts. I've used KDE for
years now and KDE4 will assure my loyalty for some time to come.

Maybe you can tell me how I can do the following:

1) Have icons on my desktop without them also being in a window.

2) Prevent konsole from storing/restoring screen sizes. I want all new
windows to be the same size, not the size of the last window I closed.

3) Have large toolbar on bottom of screen, and a smaller one for smaller
launcher icons immediately above it

I don't use icons on my desktop, but all I did was right-click a menu
