I lost my Huawei USB UMTS modem during update to 11.2 rc1.
The solution was to install the old (Milestone8) kernel back.

I was guided (Factory mailing list) to find the working kernel here:
http://widehat.opensuse.org/factory-snapshot/repo/oss/suse/i586/kernel-desktop-2.6.31-10.2.i586.rpm

The problem is in the upstream kernel.

Be aware!

No need to give a warning. It is an RC. Not something you must put on a
production machine. ;-)

Actually, it's an RC... which means WE ARE ASSUMING that everything
IS READY for production. So.. this would actually be a pretty major
thing really...

Unless you want to make the argument that openSUSE should never be
put into production... which could be a valid argument.

It's about upstream kernel.
In case someone, like me, gets his/her kernel updated to a broken one,
it's not necessarily a pece of cake to fix.

But I'll take it back. Don't worry, just update.

Then wait for the next kernel and update again Smile
Or search around for the previous working one, then grab it from some
repo and roll back.

Oh, lemme think... How do you do that if the modem is gone? Hmmm...

You go back using the official release and not the RC. ;-)

Yeah, right.
I just wonder why you are discouraging people from testing?

I don't.

Since I've been testing and tweaking my 11.2 on my EeePC during a few
milestones, I can do everything I want with it.

Sure you can.

Quote:
So far It's installed next to 11.0 which has been my OS on that already
long. But I've already changed the bootloader in such a way that 11.2 is
default.

That is great.

P.S. This kernel bug was a known one, I just didn't know of it.
_And_ it is in the upstream kernel, as Mr. Kroah-Hartman stated.
He's the one who should know Smile

OK. I read that.

So what I agree with and encourage people to do as much as possible:
1) Test it
2) Subscribe to the factory mailinglist
3) File bugreports
4) Warn people about problems in the factory distro about things in the
factory.

What I disagree with is this:
1) Warn people on a newsgroup for released versions of openSUSE about
problems in Factory. To me that is as irrelevant here as warnings about
snowstorms.

I thought you were. How silly of me.

Your advise about going to official release instead of testing the next
one made me think so.

The name of this group is alt.os.linux.suse.

It does not say "only Released openSUSE".

But I regret my post. I won't do so again.

Sorry to make you think like that. It was a failed attempt to humor.

The postings in the past have implied as much as to be solely about
released official versions in English.
