Tuxcommander on Mandrake 10.1 - no gvfs?...

Hi there!

As mentioned some days ago I'm currrently experimenting with "ancient"
versions of Mandrake linux ;-)

Well, I have Mandrake 10.1 installed on a Pentium 1 with a 233MMX
processor and 256MB RAM and everything runs fine, except the linux
port of Windows Commander / Total Commander does not work properly -
"Tux Commander" can be installed and works but to access a foreign
server via FTP and to display its filesystem in one of the two
windows, Tux Commander complains that there's a module missing, called
"VFS".

This one is also available from the download site (
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/tuxcmd ), but any attempt to install
it, fails:

[1089 root at (no spam) linux tuxcmd]# rpm --install
tuxcmd-modules-bin-0.6.50-1.i386.rpm
Fehler: Failed dependencies:
gvfs is needed by tuxcmd-modules-bin-0.6.50-1
[1090 root at (no spam) linux tuxcmd]#

Even more, on the original Mandrake 10.1 cds there's no such "gvfs",
and when taken from the Mandriva 2009 dvd the rpm installer refuses to
do so.

Any ideas how to work around?

Thanks,
best regards,

Markus

I would take a look at /rpmfind.net,/ although I believe to have read
recently that they've merged with another online repository. They used to
have a rather large repository, though.

/gvfs/ is something that - I believe - used to come as one of the Gnome
packages, because it was needed by a Gnome GUI tool for FTP access.

My memory's a little clouded on that, though, so your mileage may vary. ;-)

Thanks, I searched through rpmfind but it looks like there's no gvfs
for Mandriva < 2008. All that's available can be found on the dvd,
too.

Maybe there's no way to install it on top of MandrAKE - is there an
alternative project that provides similar features?

I'm used to work with "Total Commander" as a Norton clone in windows
because this allows to work fast when connected via ftp, if, for
instance, you develop a web site etc.

So, I'd like to have a similar environment in Linux, now.

Any recommendations?

Thanks a lot,
best regards,

Markus

What about mc, Midnight Commander?

See http://www.ibiblio.org/mc/ for details. IIRC, it was available for
Mandrake 10.1. I think it may even be installed by default, but I can't
reme,ebr back that far :(

Description via urpmq (under 2008.1):
Midnight Commander is a visual shell much like a file manager, only with way
more features. It is text mode, but also includes mouse support if you are
running GPM. Its coolest feature is the ability to ftp, view tar, zip
files, and poke into RPMs for specific files.
