gkrellm gives you a tiny window that monitors a machine's activity.
Network, CPU, disk, temperature, load average, etc. etc.
With the config menu, you can specify the width and update rate.
You can also have a daemon on a remote machine you can monitor on your desktop.

gkrellm gives you that, but if you want to save the output so you can show
your children what your cou was doing 10years ago, then I do not know

It doesn't do all that, but if you are just interested in CPU utilization
check out hotbabe.

If you run GNOME, there are some monitors you can put on the panel (known in
Windows as the "task bar". Just right click on the panel, click on "add to
panel", and select "system monitor". Then right click on the thing to get a
popup to configure it. By default it runs very fast. I slowed mine down to
once a second, but you can make it slow down to once every 10 seconds if you
like. activated the one to show CPU usage (it shows user, nice, system,
iowait, and idle), and network.

but i really want to output the result as a graph.
may be i write a script to do it.

all you need is a SNMP enabled version of top and the like..plus MRTG
itself.

These shims exists but I haven't had need to look for them.
