And by custom, I mean *JUST* what you need, and nothing else. This would be
analogous to: Install command.com (so that it boots up) then install what
accessory programs you need to get your system running what you want, w/o
any extra files. Or how how you can install a custom, (no extras) linux on
a WRT54G router. I wish there was a 'base' image for certain distros
(Slackware, OpenSuSE, etc) that basically booted up to a command line, and
that's it.
The reason for this is: I would like to be able to run linux on some of my
really old machines, and would want there to be *NO* fat what-so-ever on the
system.
Also as an aside, does anyone know of a good 'router' distro? e.g. like the
Linux Router project, but newer/better, maybe with a side of FreeNAS-like
file sharing functionality?

case) eyeballing everyone and wondering how they look naked.

Few years ago I was looking for the same thing. FrozenNorth has
already posted the URL for that. I will, however, add one thing in
this regard. These days this type of custom install is waste of time.
Unless, you really have 12 hours free and nothing else to do. I would
suggest you try Gentoo. It's clean, lean and mean, and culturally
close to Free BSD. This means 100% more secure then say Ubuntu/
Kubuntu.
PS: I am using Kubuntu, and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are a
total newbie.
In that case, it's perfect for Jonathan.
Just out of curiosity, why are you using Kubuntu?
Well, it's a long story. My first distro was Corel Linux, and then
some version of redhat, finally I landed on Brazilian Distro
Connectiva (now merged with French Mandrake) -- the best distro I
have ever used in my life. For some reason I don't like Mandriva so I
decided to try Kubuntu, and some how I eneded up make it work, so I am
sticking with it. In future, I am hoping to try BSD, and Gentoo. All
of these happen around 2004, if I am not mistaken, I have not
configure my box since then -- and it's working pefectly.
Since I don't like it why not install another distro? Well, it's a
very strange love & hate situation. Kubuntu just like Ubuntu has many
flaws, but I have mange to make it work on my P4 box, and my brand new
notebook Pentium Dual Core 1.8ghz, and truth of the matter is when it
works it works. Also, these days I really don't have a time to compile
a kernel let alone install a totally new distro. And since I don't
have any security issues I don't really care -- at least not as much.
Finally, this compuer mac-mini is becoming my main computer at home,
and since I can run most of my X programs on Notebook, I don't worry
about it alot. Eventually, I will get rid of Kubuntu. |

Slackware - LOL!
Slackware is a nice distro, but they really need to get out of 90s. I
mean who would want to install all those dependency -- they need
something like apt-get, or emerge.
Or maybe something like slapt-get perhaps?
I don't know, it seems you're the expert.
The last time I tried slackware was around mid 2002. If I am not
mistaken slapt-get came around 2003 so I didn't pay much attention to
it. Also copycating apt-get didn't help slackware users, even as late
as 2005 slackware was known as "dependency hell". It is good for
hobby, and that's about it.
Linux Distro are like these
Newbie Users: Knoppix/Xandros/Mandriva -- maybe Ubuntu/Kubuntu
Semi & Advance Users; Gentoo/Debian
Lots of time no job & old P3 computer; stick with slackware. |
