I am trying to install SUSE 10.3 from DVD onto an old Pentium 2
laptop. This laptp has no internal floppy or DVD drive and will not
boot from USB. I can boot from the hard disc or CD only.

I have a bootable CD which gets me to a DOS prompt and I can then
browse the DVD over USB. But I can't seem to get the installation to
start. Everything says it need windows to run.

I have tried copying files onto the HDD and booting from that but
nothing works. The fact is I'm new to linux and have no clue what to
copy or what to run. Please help.

TIA.

Why not get the CD?

http://www.opensuse.org/

New to Linux? Try this:

http://www.mandriva.com/en

and choose the install CD's for your old HW:

ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.mandriva.com/MandrivaLinux/official/iso/2008.1

I agree with F8BOE's comments, but would add that for that system you might
find that PCLinuxOS 2008-MiniMe, which is a Mandriva spinoff, works
better.

You can download a 10.3 iso file from which to make a liveCD (bootable)
which contains the option of installing openSuse from the following
location:

http://software.opensuse.org/old/10.3

You might also be interested in looking at the following site which
compares various linux distro's (hardware requirements etc):

A lot of the linux distro's have a LiveCD version (the various *ubuntu
flavours for example) for downloading/trying before installing
etc.....Smile
