Big Blue’s 20,000-strong techies have been advised to ditch Microsoft
Office and use open standards software such as Lotus Symphony instead.

IBM chief information officer Mark Hennessey and veep Gina Poole
issued a memo yesterday urging the firm’s staff to take “a new, more
integrated approach to desktop productivity software", reports the
Irish Times.

I can't comment either, other than to say I've seen the memo.

But you do Spamowitz, otherwise you have no hope of finding a job:

These days, it's pretty much critical to no BOTH commercial AND OSS.
The commercial software is the "primary" skills, but the OSS software
is where you provide the extra VALUE to the CUSTOMER (Employer,
client, employer's client,...).

Typically, on any project, there are both elements. The commercial
software such a Oracle, DB2, Websphere, SAP, ... is the software that
holds the "Crown jewels", but the other piece, PERL, Apache, PHP,
AJAX, Eclipse, Linux,... are the accelerators that give you the
competitive advantage and help you get the project done more quickly.
The OSS can help you shave as much as 30-40% of the total development
effort off a project.

I'm assuming those are Roy's skills, and those are good skills to
have. I'd also recommend adding PERL, PHP, AJAX, and Ruby, probably
in that order.

Roy would have no trouble getting a job in a "traditional" programming
environment. He is more interested in Medical Biophysics. That's a
very specialized field and there are some more advanced skills
required for that. My guess is that when Dr Schestowitz graduates, he
will be too busy to post to cola. But knowing Roy, he'll find a
little free time to post a few tidbits.

Had to follow the short vitae link.

DFS, I've never seen your Vitae/Resume. Care to share it with us?

I forgot, all WinTrolls in this group seem to need to remain
completely anonymous.

First Spamowitz has to *want* to find a job.
Apparently, like Van Wilder and Peter Pan, Spamowitz has no intention of
ever growing up and leaving college for the big bad world.

He's 22 and he just got his PhD. That isn't too shabby. Lots of
people are just graduating from a 4 year college by the time they are
that age. He's about the same age as my Daughter, who will be
graduating from college in December (she changed majors).

According to his web site, he was 22 in 2004. It is extremely unlikely
that he is 22 now.

When did he say he invented Java? Oh, he didn't, it's just another lie from

Who?

Oh. You mean that buffoon that gets slapped around regularly by the
people in the Ubuntu group, right? I heard about him (similar to the
saying I heard about HIV, or I heard about Rosie O'Donnell, or I heard
about the black plague). I don't see anything from him, though. Not
even secondhand, except in a few odd circumstances.

Ah. Now I remember who he is. He's the sole authority on what can and
cannot be included in the only authorized linux distribution.
