Hello There:
New to Linux. I downloaded from 2 different sources Knoppix V5.1 iso and
created a cd.
Every time I try to boot the computers with the cd, Knoppix starts with the
initial screen but
then I get something like:
Probing / loading AGP modules...
Starting the x window system...
Retrying with server xorg ((vesa)
Retrying with server xorg ((fbdev)
unloading unnnedded AGP module
ERROR: No suitable x-server found for your card.
And it won't continue.
I tried in another computer and a laptop with the same result.
I have no clue what to do after that, any help in the subject?
Thank you in advance.

You may start "knoppix 1" but it won't open a gui then, just
a "commandline".
In that commandline, type "lspci" and tell us which graphic card you have,
or tell which windows driver works with that. |

When you download a file, the FIRST thing to do is to check the MD5 or SHA
sum.
I presume that you downloaded 5.1.0? I had some problems too, but 5.0.1
worked better for me... Maybe 5.1.1 works better, or you can also test the
5.3.1 DVD if you have a fast i-net connection.
Try to use the F1->F3 options on the CD.
If Knoppix starts in terminal mode, you just have to type: startx <ENTER> to
start the GUI.

This means your video adapters are not recognized. I suggest trying a different
live CD or DVD version of Knoppix. Or get the Mandriva Linux One 2008.1 live CD
and try that: http://www.mandriva.com/en/download

I had that problem on some machines so I switched to Slax which I like
better now.

Dont try to run Linux on Dell. Gateway aint so swift either. Compaq or
HP are better bets. I've a dozen distros and tried to install them on a
couple dozen PCs in the past few years. Xandros is the only distro I saw
that never failed to get the video right, but there prolly is a cheap
distro that will work for you. |
