"SEATTLE — Sterling Ball is Microsoft-free. Two years ago, the maker
of Ernie Ball electric guitars and strings was slapped with a $90,000
fine by the Business Software Alliance for what the company says was
unwitting use of eight unlicensed copies of Microsoft Office."

A friend of mine says that he seems to recall that Bill Gates
apologized to Ernie/Sterling
Ball for this.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

Ernie Ball is a very small company and this is from 5 years ago.
They got caught with their pants down pirating software.
Next you'll be bringing up Lardo Florida and their Linux migration.

I can find out for you.
I know some people who work there.

What I do know is that the entire affair was way over the top and that they
were treated like common criminals.
Uncalled for IMHO as they are an excellent company.
