No graphical config tool for Gdm. The explanation at Gnome's site
for command line config assumes you know a lot about "schemas" or
want to spend the time figuring it out, if you can find that
information to begin with.
Switch to Kdm by commenting out this line
in /etc/X11/prefdm (comment the exec line).
# Fallbacks, in order
exec gdm "$ at (no spam) " >/dev/null 2>&1 </dev/null
Then configure Kdm in KDE System Settings > Advanced.
Question. The only greeter offered is Fedora9(Sulphur) and it
stinks like its name. Fuggly. What are the options for using a
diff greeter?

I've downgraded to gdm-2.20.1-5.fc8.i386
it works fine.
