I'm totally clueless from the start of this and every bit of handholding I
can get would be appreciated. I have 1-1/2 hours of VHS SP video and would
like to transfer it to DVD on my Gentoo system if possible. I have a
Hauppauge BT878 TV/video card in the computer. Extra credit for dividing
the 1-1/2 hours into three half-hours (three shows).

The tape is precious and I'd like it in my machines only, otherwise I'd
consider a transfer at a good video house. I don't know a reason I'd ever
want to do this again (not that I wouldn't keep the instructions), which
is why I ask for handholding instead of doing mass research and learning
all about video transfer.

emerge avidemux qdvdauthor

Start with connecting your VCR to the Hauppauge, start with

(assuming you have built the kernel modules and loaded those, see the
gentoo wiki, if not)
cat /dev/video0 > vhs.mpg

When the play-up is finished, just ctrl-c

Use avidemux (or transcode) to cut the video into the right sizes

When you are finished, use qdvdauthor to create your DVD.

not really that difficult... just see to that the file format is ok that
you save from avidemux/transcode, just check the qdvdauthor what format
it likes to have as source.
