My cable modem provider was recently purchased by Comcast and the DHCP
servers changed. My Smoothwall Express 2.0 box is unable to get a IP
address. I plugged a Windows 2000 box directly into the cable modem
and was able to get it working by issuing the following commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /renew
Is there an equivalent procedure for the Smoothwall installation?

Solved the problem myself and wanted to share the solution for others
out there that experience the same issue.
Comcast uses Motorola Surfboard modems and the solution is to power
off (unplug) the modem for a period of time (people claim everything
from 4 minutes to 4 hours so take your pick). Plug in the modem,
start up the Smoothwall box, then startup the other computers on the
network. I was never able to find a direct answer to my original
question about flushing the cache in Smoothwall, but this solution
worked just fine.

Most of the Surfboard modems require a power cycle whenever the MAC
address of the device connected to the modem changes. This will
normally happen any time a new device (router, pc, etc) is plugged
into the modem. I remember some of the old RCA modems that Comcast
used to use actually required you to hold the reset button down since
power cycling the device didn't work.
Glad to hear you got everything up and running! I'm just getting over
a battle with an upgrade to a Commercial Smoothwall upgrade. I jumped
four versions to the latest release and it took some time to get used
to the more granular settings of the new software. Very nice product. |
