Hello All!
Regarding updating v2.0.9 to v3.0.
I am assuming here that there is no upgrade procedure just fresh install and
clearing all HDD contents.
Using Red (linked to a ethernet cable to a Zoom X3 phone broadband) and Green
linked to ethernet Hub ; has anyone had any problems / no problems with this
scenario?

Yes, major problems here. There appears to be something wrong with the
startup/init scripts for the Red interface (at least when it is set up to
use DHCP to get it's address and routing from the cable modem). It does
not get initialized and you have no Red interface. I'm not the only one
who has experienced this, and I'm quite sure it's nothing in my setup. I
probably could have fussed around and fixed it, but it was much easier to
just install IPCop instead, which is working great.

I had the same problem. Was able to bring up the red nic & dhcp on it
manually. Since then it has worked no problem. I cannot get snort to
work, which is pissing me off. I am going to give it until the end of
the month, and probably dump it if I can't get it working. |

Just got on the forums at smoothwall.org and I can see the following problems:
OK..... I don't see the specific problem with the RED interface that I've
been talking about, but that doesn't make it any less real for me. Not
sure why it isn't more well-recognized, but I don't really care too much.
As I said, I'm now running IPCop and am very happy with it. Perhaps I'll
give Smoothwall another look one day, but perhaps I won't. Good luck.

I assume the issue is more about the NIC card not being seen than it
is about what modem one has.
The modem might matter only to the dynamic DNS update script and
should not make too much of a difference for anything else. (That is
now not a mod but part of the 3.0 install)
I tested 3.0 without any Red interface issues but I am using a run of
the mill type 3Com 10/100 that is using a basic driver. I would like
to know what the hardware is on the ones that won't configure. If they
are using a newer NIC that might be a clue.
I personally am waiting for the Grey listing and a few other mods to
be activated before I bring my 3.0 to front line status.
As always, when you jump out on the bleeding edge expect some misery.
I assume there will be a year or so of updates until you get back to
the rock solid state 2.0 is in now.
Right now my 2.0 is working like a champ and there is no need to get
too adventurous.
Cheers
Guess I'll stick with my 2.0 (fixes 9) then, if it ain't broke don't
fix it I say. Incidentally I use my Smoothie with an Alcatel
Speedtouch USB modem, does 3.0 handle them?
