Well, that's not the complete story. See responses to my posting in
de.comp.text.tex (in German). Apparently it depends on the version of
(La/Te)Tex. teTeX 2.0 (both Suse and Debian) and TeX live 2005 take
shell variables, teTeX 3.0 does not.
