Try this with XP (all patched)
<HTML>
<BODY>
<IMG SRC="./sweetydead.jpg" width="9999999" height="9999999">
</BODY>
</HTML>
The image does not need to be that large, a very small one is sufficient
Just the /declaration/ of the size is enough to trigger the bug
Save your data before. The machine will BSOD

ouch.
Probably worth bearing in mind that Photoshop [5.0] won't open an image
where the pixel dimension exceeds 64k - it throws an error message
telling you that a: it can't open the image or b: it doesn't have enough
memory. On a box with 1GB RAM it kinda makes you blink. Bit of a drag
when I'm trying to photomontage a 360 off my 8MP camera. Ah, well,
Debian cluster with 28 processors and 17.5GB RAM and GIMP to the rescue :)

Damn, I'll have to try that the next time I have access to an XP machine! Or
maybe I will add a page to a site with a Link that says "DANGER! XP users
DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK" just to see how many would! |

May I note that firefox on linux wasn't real happy with this either. It made
firefox very sluggish but at least didn't kill it... Just really really

Not a problem here, firefox 1.0.4 on Ubuntu. No slow down, no resource
hogging, cpu not showing any unusual usage. What version of FF are you
using?

I've tried it with FF 1.0.4 on SuSE, & it seems ok.

Tried it. No BSOD. No crash. IE simply doesn't display the image with a
width and height of 9999999. Dropping a digit (999999) shows the image
but it's very slow. Dropping another digit (99999) shows the image and
scrolling is sluggish but usable.
Nice FUD though. BSOD... now that would be a lie. |

It BSOD'd mine.
XP Home (I believe SP1) with both IE and Firefox 1.0.4
This is a straight copy/paste the code that Peter posted, using a small jpeg:
http://telon.dynalias.net/crashxp/crashxp.html
This is the message XP gives me when rebooting after the BSOD:

That seems to be a rather pathological example - I see little real
practical implication. |

There are many pathological examples of such things. The motivation is
determined by whomever decides to put things like that into practice.
Perhaps their only interest would be crashing Windross machines that
visit their website. Maybe they'd like to email such a thing to their
enemies. Possibly someone likes to keep lists of Stupid Winders Tricks
to show others. Who knows?
One doesn't have to understand *why* someone would use it for that same
someone to put it to use.
