AMD K7 and Alpha 21264

I was wondering, since the AMD K7 Slot A's and the Alpha 21264's use the
same AMD motherboard, the 751 Northbridge, would it be possible to snatch up
an AMD ABIT K7 and plug in a good old Alpha CPU? Say from something like an
UP1500? Just wondering... It would be nice to have Alpha CPU with AGP/PC133
mem... Will L G

Hardly. If I'm not mistaken, the UP1500 uses DDR-RAM, thus being faster

than an Athlon-board with PC133-mem. On the other hand, what Jay said,
you would have to rewrite the firmware and you'd need to resolder a
matching socket. Back in the days (TM) there where plans to build
systems, that could take either, Alpha and Athlon. But since the AMDs
back then used Slot A/Socket A and the Alphas have been equipped with
Slot B and Socket Whatchamacallit, there was no way to get them both
work in the same board.
Too bad, AMD was so weak back then. Would have been nice if AMD would
have bought the rights to the Alpha.

Yea it would have been nice, just a thought. You know, the Alpha still lives
on though, its called the Itranium... No joke, Itel bought the Alpha team
from Compaq then incorporated the EV8 in the latest Itaniums... Pretty wild
when it wasn't that long ago when Digital [I think it was when they were
owned by them] sued Intel for patent infringment... I guess they simply
mismanaged the monies won... Will L G

Well yes, parts of it, although I'm not sure that the technology is
already incorporated into available CPUs.

Yeah. Funny story, that. DEC sued Intel, DEC won, Intel bought Alpha.
What went wrong?

Quite dated *g*
OK, that's what I had burried in the back of my head as well. So they
don't ship those EV8-enabled Itanics yet. Montecito is due sometime in
2006 or possibly even 2007 (6 years late of the origninal EV8-schedule).
Quite impressive work of Intel & HP, if you ask me *snicker*

Yea, I sure running through Digital/Dec/HP/Compaq licensing must have been a
'B' Wink
I still have my eye out for a UP1500 w/AGP support though... Will L G

Together with an 800MHz EV68 that one would be a dream... Still gonna

stick with my XP1000 ;-)

What went wrong?

Greedy liar took control of company, laid off a bunch of people to
make it salable while lying about plans to sell, sold company and
pocketed a lot of money while shafting employees.

The usual, in other words.

Now, now--I was careful to not mention any names. Still can't believe
there wasn't an SEC prosecution or a class-action suit. Should have
been both.

What would this have changed ?

the harm was done anyway and on purpose.
Intel & Co would have done their 'job' anyway.

Greedy liar would have lost his money, and hopefully spent several years

It may not have brought back Digital and the Alpha, but it would have
served as a deterrent to the next corporate hack artist.

Maybe. It would have been fun to see what might have transpired if Compaq
had sold/licensed the Alpha to AMD...

Yea, i would have liked to see that. I bet the Alpha linux would have most
likely have been the AMD 64 [Opteron] line. Its pretty wild, AMD/Intel had
so many issues with the 64bit format its not even funny. When they finally
got it 'worked out', Alpha still clobbered them mhz for mhz. Will L G
