From a debian box
( Linux serve 2.6.18-6-686 #1 SMP Mon Aug 18 08:42:39 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux ) that occasionally ( every few months maybe ) locks
up such that even three-letter-salute at the console does
nothing though some processes keep running fine, such
as logged on remote shells.
syslogd notified me today:

Near as I can tell all is running OK right now. Is this apache
crashing?

Could be. there are both some memory issues being addressesd in the c
library as far as I can tell from latest updates and the possibility of
an overheating CPU due to blocked fans, is always there.

Hmm. Looks like oldstable...

Something's wedged, then... Alt-SysRq-S, -U, -S, -B *should* cleanly sync,
unmount, sync (probably unnecessarily) and reboot.

A little more would help (*everything* from a few lines preceding the "oops"
line to the "end trace" line), but it looks like either something's
overwritten a return address or a function pointer.
If you have any proprietary kernel modules (I see no indication either way),
you should try open-source equivalents, even if it means using VESA drivers
or plain VGA.

No, but it *does* mean that apache2 was the active process on that CPU when
this occurred. It looks very much like a kernel bug, but I wouldn't rule out
hardware problems – is the above consistent with other occurrences?
