Maybe you can find some more clue in the output from dmesg. Did you try to
write on more than one DVD? Did you try different brands of media?

I'm not sure it makes much of a difference, but the command I use is:

growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/hdc=filename.iso

Is there a way to prevent The Buffer underrun error with growisofs?
I just tried to burn the iso in Windows with InfraRecorder and is gone well!
