printer loosing characters...

On a newly set up Suse 10.3, some characters (perrhaps 1 in 10 or 1 in
20) get lost when printing through the parallel port; even when copying
a file straight into /dev/lp0. I suspect some conflict/problem with
IRQ's, but how to diagnose this?
TIA,
KA

Could be a defective printer port or cable. Is there any pattern of which
characters are lost? Does the same problem occur with another OS?

Sorry I should have elaborated there. Both printer and cable work OK on
another computer so it must be in the SuSE box.
And no I cannot find a pattern in what characters get lost.

Did you try different settings for the parallel port (SPP? EPP? ECP?),
those settings are usually done in the CMOS setup.

Morning Henrik,
No, I do think the CMOS set-up will be the next point of attack but
should first like to know what settings Linux assumes for the printer
port, in particular the IRQ.

PS hear you later today professionally, I suppose?

This did the trick indeed, my suspicion was at IRQ but all was OK after
I changed the CMOS setup from ECP to Normal. Many thanks!

Good that we found the solution!

About "hear you later today...", I think that you are mixing me up with
some other Henrik Carlqvist? I live in sweden.
