Windows 7: How to upgrade your computer
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8317005.stm
This is what you call easy?!? - up to an including setting environment
variables?!?
On my Debian box tracking testing: at the command line, as root, type:
*aptitude update*
*aptitude safe-upgrade*
I've been doing that since Potato
But then I'm a miserable, useless *home user* (def: one who works at home)
and not ready for the high-tech, ultra complicated, very popular, but
somewhat flawed OS. Also my work depends on constant access to a working,
reliable system so of course I use Debian: the only one I have and the only
one I use. Smile

It is kind of funny. You go to a MS forum and you hear nothing about
Linux, except for those trying to peddle it.

But here is dumb COLA land, you hear nothing but MS this and MS that.

What a joke COLA is what a joke.

There are Windwoes advocacy groups. Except for the occasional troll
it's pretty much an echo chamber, though.
"Rebooting and reinstalling is fun!" "I have twenty-seven anti-virus and
anti-malware applications on my box -- it's fun collecting them!" "Heck
viruses and trojans are fun! They give you a chance to reinstall again,
and that's FUN!" "I love the challenge of KSOD and BSOD, because I get
to reinstall again -- it's fun!!"

And don't forget:

I woke up today and the machine wouldn't boot. I spent half of the
day just getting things installed and getting things set up for
minimal use. I decided to surf the 'net and when I went to Youtube I
found I didn't have any sound. I checked the usual (speakers plugged
in and turned on, the device manager shows it's working, etc).
Nothing. So I deleted the card and rebooted. When it came up it said
it was setting up the card. I let it go and rebooted. When I came
back up still no sound. I tried updating the driver, but it said
there were no updates. I went to the manufacturer's site and got the
latest and installed it. It still didn't work. So I deleted the card,
rebooted and told it not to set the card up. I did so manually using
the driver I downloaded. I did the reboot and tried again when it
came up. Nothing again.

It's funny because sound was working yesterday, before the machine
wouldn't boot.

So, I tried again. But this time I wiped the drive, installed it and
checked sound. Nada. I installed the service packs and updates. No
sound. I installed the manufacturer's driver and it started working.

Aren't you glad you use Windows? Don't you wish everybody did?

My mother-in-law had a computer (Windows 98, so it's been a while back)
that used to lose its sound card. All I would have to do is go to Device
Manager, remove the driver and let Windows "rediscover" it. Then it
would work fine up until the time it wouldn't work again. It actually
happened enough that she learned how to fix it on her own (she's in her
70s).

My Dad's computer got some kind of trojan/malware/virus/or whatever else
Windows gets -- and he lost the use of his modem (external US Robotics)
and CD drive. He thought maybe lightning took it out. I had him boot up
with a Live Linux CD and the hardware worked fine.

Ah, yes, memories of Windows.
