Hello,
I wonder whether any users could comment on their experiences
with getting scanners to work under Linux using the sane software.
Which models offer best bang for the buck while being very compatible
with Linux? For instance I know that for printers HP seems to be the
best brand for Linux compatible printers. What about for scanners
that do good color scanning and nothing else?

I bought an Epson Perfection 2400 about 5 years ago: my
first scanner and I suppose I chose it based on reviews.
It has worked perfectly under various Debian-based distros,
currently Debian Sid (unstable). Early on, I scanned some
35-mm color slides. A bit fussy to load, but great results.
Since, I use it mostly to copy 8-1/2x11 printed pages.
I'm satisfied, would buy another scanner from them ...
but not a printer!

I've extremely good experiences with Epson scanners (and printers) -
purchased refurb for great prices from the Epson online store. Some
models require that you install the 'iscan' software from avasys.jp in
order to get the proper drivers - then you can use 'iscan' or sane. |

The scanners in the HP All in Ones work fine, there have been some
postings about problems with standalone HP scanners but I can tell you
from personal experience that the scanners in the HP Office Jets work
perfectly. I have the HP Office Jet Pro L&650, I another Office Jet
before this one and it worked also. |

Frankly, you have posted a pile of non-specific crap.
Say explicitly what you want to achieve with your scanner.
If it isn't anything specific(happy snap scanning), then I'll just add my
2c to the chorus of HP scanners from since whenever it was possible under
Linux.
Have a look under /etc/sane.d where there are 73 device configuration
files to get the best out of each scanner. |

I run a Brother MFC-7840W on Mepis (a Debian-based distro). Works great.
I bought this device because if provided printer, scanner, copier and
fax in a very neat wireless package at a very attractive price (it was
on sale). I also liked that toner and drum were separate (unlike HP) and
were available locally at a competitive price. I was resigned to
Windows-only functionality.
I was very pleasantly surprised to goto to Brother's web site checking
for updated drivers to find Linux drivers for the device along with
detailed installation instructions. Worked like a champ!
I have been very happy with this device!

That is almost what I use, I have the Epson 2450 photo hooked up with
firewire, they did have some usb errors with the usb drivers with sane
but that is supposed to be fixed, don't know as I use the firewire
myself. I also have a Ricoh printer mine is the networked SPc221n
using the Ethernet cable hooked to my router with a static IP address.
The only problem I had is under Fedora 10,11, and Opensuse 11.1 xsane
does not see the device, but you can use sane cmd line and load the
Epson backend and scan that way. If you really want a consistent
driver, and software you might want to consider vuescan. Just make
sure your model is supported, they have Linux, Windows drivers and is
considered one of the best scanner software packages around. In fact
if you like GUI, and want consistent scans I would consider that
option as you know your hardware will be 100 covered. With sane you
might not have all the features covered depending on what model you
use. |
